Shorts under school summer dress?

mommathatwearspink · 22/04/2019 21:19

DD (5) goes back to school after half term tomorrow and will be going back in her Summer dress. I’ve heard friends talking about their daughters wearing white modesty shorts under their school summer dresses... I didn’t know this was a thing?? Should I invest in some for DD or are knickers adequate on their own??

I n my school, girls who enjoy doing cartwheels on the field wear shorts underneath. Don't think you need to otherwis e.

Teacher here. Shorts seem to have become a 'thing' under skirts/dresses (it wasn't when I was at school!). Usually in KS2 but I have noticed it filtering down to EYFS sometimes.

Knickers are fine, it seems to depend on how you are with that as a parent (or your DD wants them because the other girls do). If you're happy with just knickers then go with that. Especially as your DD is only Year R or 1.

I've never known a reason for them like boys pulling up skirts or girls inadvertently flashing their private areas. But I guess it could have happened.

DD is Y1 and hasn't mentioned it yet.

Think it's an older year thing.

I remember wearing shorts under my skirt at Junior school as I spent all of my play times cartwheeling/handstand

DD10 wears shorts under her skirt as she spends all day doing handstands. DD7 copies so also wears shorts 🙄 but neither will actually wear shorts to school. I’ve got the younger one a playsuit type summer school thing.

There's also different choices of underwear - we wore our knickers for pe back in the day but they were navy and much more substantial than normal pants (like the ones runners wear)

My dd has recently started, however she’s 11. At 5 I wouldn’t have bothered

madness
the knickers are there to hide the genitals
but then we need to hide the knickers with shorts
what's next, we hide the shorts with , I don't know, trousers?
handstands or whatever, it doesn't matter if people see your pants !
they have covered your genitals, and done their job!

My girls took it upon themselves to wear PE shorts under their skirts from about Y1. They did this because the boys laugh and point at their pants, the school and other parents never took it seriously and did anything about it. The boys were seen as innocent little children (which of course they were) playing. IMO behaviour like this should have been treated with the same level of seriousness as racist incidents, not for the sake of the girls, but for the boys, we are inadvertently training them to harass women by treating this as harmless fun.

Dd1 aged eleven started doing this last year as her friends all were. Before that she didn't care. Dd2 is only six but does it too coz her sister does it.

Might as well go back to wearing knickerbockers.

So even little girls are feeling they have to cover up because of boys? This is awful.

When I was at primary school, we had bars that you could hang upside down on, so I was around 7 years old when I started to wear pe shorts under my dress. That was over 20 years ago , so not new.

My dd got in trouble from, the deputy head when she (dd not deputy headGrin) was playing in the sandpit outside for showing her knickers. I was furious. Furious! I think I did mention knickerbockers in my rant.

Dd was so upset and she wanted to wear shorts and I didn't want her to so we compromised on 'monkey bar knickers' which were really knickers in the shape of shorts.

Its the girls that tease the other girls about flashing their knickers at my school. Not the boys - who aren't remotely bothered.
Why all the men/boy bashing in this site?

I don't get all indignant about the suggestion they keep their underwear covered certainly. In many ways I think it's easier to ask for underwear to be covered in situations where most people are dressed from a young age as a matter of manners than to get to a certain age and try to explain what has changed.

Will ask DD what she thinks. I think it's likely that if she stays into cartwheels she'll probably revert to shorts and polo uniform anyway after a few days of the novelty of dresses. It doesn't help getting dresses stuck over your face.

If you want to go ahead with the shorts thing then a couple of pairs of cheap primark leggings cut above the knee then folded /sewn to make a sort of cycling shorts.
I do this when riding my bike in my summer dresses.

I put shorts on my daughter (Y1) as it can still be a bit chilly and keeps her warm. She wants to wear the summer dress.

My dd yr 4 started this in y2 because her friends did it. She never wears shorts under dresses out of school. I just let her do it, but I have talked to her about it. I think it's peer pressure

DD's (reception) teacher actually advises parents to put shorts on under the girls dresses. She said it saves them flashes their pants to everyone.

I would be going into school about that. How dare the teacher suggest to children they need to cover their pants.

Hi. It's not just a cartwheeling thing, it's a sitting on the floor thing. Its pretty difficult to sit on the floor in a dress and not show your knickers. Primary kids spend a lot of time sitting on the carpet in class and in the hall for assemblies and are expected to sit cross-legged. You therefore show your pants if you're wearing a short skirt. I noticed a lot of girls wearing white cycling type shorts under gingham dresses last year in ks1 and 2 and thought it looked very smart.

Elizabeth

And what is the problem?

Report
youarenotkiddingme · 23/04/2019 07:52

The 'shorts' they tend to wear are simply the little cotton hot pant/cycling shorts you see cheerleaders, gymnasts, dancers and runners wearing.

My concern for young girls is thrush due to getting too hot. But these shorts as underwear are fine because they simply look like boxer shorts.
Boys boxers would do the job just as well! (The trunks style ones)
