Bloody embarrassed... how do you all pronounce 'thus' ?

I'm totally embarrassed just because this happened in front of my partners dad.

I am currently writing up a college assignment and used the word 'thus' in a sentence. Now, not using this word a lot I asked my partner who was standing with his dad if this sentence made sense.
When I pronounced thus all I got was 'it's thus! Thus!' from both of them. Obviously writing it down you don't know how it's said.

I pronounce it 'th-us' like 'fuss' but using 'th' they said it is 'the-us' obviously said as one word and not with a hyphen in.

I know I'm 100% wrong but has anyone else pronounced it my way making my embarrassment less?

Definitely thus to rhyme with fuss!

Readytogogogo Sun 21-Apr-19 12:26:22

You’re correct, they are wrong. It’s pronounced to rhyme with fuss. If it helps your argument, I have a Masters degree in English Literature.

I say it with the th to sound like the th in the rather than the th in think if that makes sense.

MongerTruffle Sun 21-Apr-19 12:27:36

You’re correct. I don’t understand how else you could pronounce it.

IhateBoswell Sun 21-Apr-19 12:27:51

Thus fuss wuss cuss bus

MightyAtlantic Sun 21-Apr-19 12:27:53

Yeah, it rhymes with bus. You're right and they're twats wrong.

Usuallyinthemiddle Sun 21-Apr-19 12:27:56

Th (as in The ) uss

NewAccount270219 Sun 21-Apr-19 12:27:58

Thus rhymes with fuss!

Are you sure they didn't think that the word you were going for was 'thesis'? Though they're still saying it a bit off if so!

needanappp Sun 21-Apr-19 12:28:02

Erm it definitely rhymes with fuss!!

UCOinanOCG Sun 21-Apr-19 12:28:11

But it definitely rhymes with fuss

Rumboogie Sun 21-Apr-19 12:28:13

Don't understand. It is Thus like Fuss as you said. What is The-us?

OriginofSpecies Sun 21-Apr-19 12:28:44

One syllable, rhymes with fuss.

eternalopt Sun 21-Apr-19 12:29:29

Yep. Rhymes with fuss. Internet and all online dictionary resources agree. They are rude and wrong

Scabetty Sun 21-Apr-19 12:29:32

Hard th as in then, not soft as in thin

NewAccount270219 Sun 21-Apr-19 12:29:44

Oh, wait, do you have an accent where 'th' sounds a bit like 'f', like 'fink' for 'think'? And they were correcting you to emphasise the th? I still think they're a bit twatty for correcting you, if so, but I can see what they meant.

Soubriquet Sun 21-Apr-19 12:29:45

You are right, they are wrong!

It’s thus to rhyme with fuss

You don’t say the-is for this do you?

Rumboogie Sun 21-Apr-19 12:29:53

Th as in The

Isadora2007 Sun 21-Apr-19 12:29:56

It does rhyme with fuss. But it’s not a breathy “th” like in tooTH it’s the “th” from THey

SoyDora Sun 21-Apr-19 12:29:57

Err... did they think you meant a different word? As thus rhymes with fuss.

musicposy Sun 21-Apr-19 12:30:05

I can't see the difference in your pronunciations.

I say the th sound as it would be in "the" with the word "us" on the end
So, like "this" but with an "us" sound.

You shouldn't be embarrassed. I bet everybody has a few words they've never properly heard spoken. Making you feel small is bad manners on their part, not a fault on yours.
