... I'm going to tell you about all the secret and amazing foods you just (most likely) ignore when you wander down the aisles....

Alibi Max
Location: world food, Polish section
What is it? A polish version of Lion, but bigger and nicer and cheaper. 50p normally. Currently 3 for £1 at Tesco.

Wedel - Jaffa cakes
Location: polish food
What are they? The only Jaffa cakes you will ever eat ever again. Also come in cherry flavour and raspberry.

Chilli and Lemon grills
Location: world foods, asian food section
What are they? Then is delicious potato snack you'll ever have. Lemony and spicy and delicious little crisps

quorn southern fried nuggets
Where? Freezers vegetarian section

What are they? A Good, spicy, cheap (especially as they're £1 a bag right now)
L alternative to chicken nuggets.

frozen garlic/ginger cubes
Where? Freezer, Asian section
What are they? About 30 cubes if crushed garlic, ginger (or both mixed together) around £1-£1.50. saves peeling and chopping fresh, and way cheaper than any 'lazy garlic'

I want to try all those things now! Are crisps spicy hot or just taste spicy?

How are these secret or hidden? They are at closing time and therefore near best before date, they are now bargains. This happens at every shop, it’s not a secret or wonder

And you sound like a salesperson, a bad one at that

I love the frozen garlic & ginger! I have just bought a bag of chopped spinach from the same section, apparently it's chopped really fine & no stringy bits .

Is this all at Tesco? If so I’ve never seen the frozen cubes of garlic and ginger, they sound fantastic.
I’ve Just bought the frozen pearl onions from Ocado, haven’t tried them yet, but they were recommended by James Martin!

Daisy the world food aisles quite often have larger packs of spices which are better value than the teeny tiny jars in the main section.

Have used the frozen garlic/ginger cubes for years. I also buy the frozen chilli ones too.

Oh and like Auntie says World Food aisle also has cheaper tins of tomatoes and kidney beans and chick peas than the regular tinned veg aisle.

It also has huge bottles of
Mint sauce and sweet chilli dipping sauce for less than a small bottle or jar on the usual aisle,

And still 4 x the price in an asian grocer.

Samra and S and D in Wolverhampton if you want anything Asian. 20 different varieties of Bombay mix, including 'London mix' which is the mild version.

Veg that includes tinda and kerala, 10 types of aubergine and 5 types of mango.

Then you can proceed to Uppal's for fab samosas.

Ready made Polish salad
All Polish mayonnaise.
A mix for falafel to which you just add water at Morrison's.

Report
StellaMorris · 15/02/2019 06:16

Agreed about world foods aisle! The frozen garlic, ginger etc is brilliant.

The Morrison’s fallafel mix is not nice though.

My supermarket hero is frozen apple strudel. Costs £1, has done for about 30 years, and you get 8 decent potions out of it. Almost certainly not authentic to anyone actually Austrian, but delicious!

Quorn nuggets are definitely a win here - the nearest thing to a McDonald’s nugget you can get!

I Always look at the Polish and Asian sections in a supermarket.
Would it entertain you to know that I've seen a British section in a US supermarket. My family there (obviously British descent and regular ish visitors here) found a British store for my amusement. I was told by one of the staff there that she wanted to make cottage pie but didn't have the right kind of oven ConfusedHmm😂

Whackaguacamole · 15/02/2019 06:50

Yes quorn nuggets are incredible! Not the vegan ones mind.

Frozen produce the best, baby carrot, green beans, raspberries, broad beans are way cheaper than the fresh versions so always in my freezer plus butternut squash and sweet potato cubes that are a pain to chop

Justagirlwholovesaboy - how unpleasant. grumpy in the middle of the night by any chance? Maybe you need more sleep.
