Fascinating chickpea question

It doesn't get more exciting than this!

I have a recipe which asks me to soak dried chickpeas overnight, then they will be going in the slow cooker for 6-8 hours. No preheating or anything before going in. Recipe also specifically says tinned chickpeas won't work for this.

My packet of chickpeas tells me very sternly that after soaking the chickpeas must not be cooked in a slow cooker without being boiled for ten minutes first. It is adamant on the subject.

If I plough on, how ill am I going to make my family....?

Reccy2018 Wed 23-Jan-19 21:31:39

You won't be ill and you can also definitely used tinned 😂

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse Wed 23-Jan-19 21:33:39

I don't think you'll be ill. But I think the tinned peas might fall apart.

Ylvamoon Wed 23-Jan-19 21:36:12

Soak them and boil them... honestly, they will taste amazing.
(... But tinned ones will do if that is what you have!)

Exhibit a: recipe for falafel type thing which I hesitate to call felafel (even though the recipe does) because of the presence of sweet potato and the absence of frying

Exhibit b: bossy chickpea packet

Not shown: chickpeas happily soaking (because OF COURSE I only looked at the packet afterwards).

There were definitely photos when impressed post .. hang on.

FreezerBird Wed 23-Jan-19 21:57:48

Oh, and there they are, as if by magic.

RLABC Wed 23-Jan-19 22:00:06

Can you post the recipe please OP? Falafels are made with soaked, "raw" chickpeas, they're not cooked first.

TheDogAteMySock Wed 23-Jan-19 22:01:20

I just did a quick Google and it seems that slow cooking after an overnight soak is ok. I think your bossy packet is just being over cautious.

RLABC Wed 23-Jan-19 22:03:09

Ok, crossposted but still, falafels are made from soaked, dry, uncooked chickpeas. I'd find another slow cooker recipe or cook them normally.

ProfessorCustard Wed 23-Jan-19 22:07:25

The last time I made falafel the recipe also specified that they shouldn’t be tinned because they are too squishy so the falafel would have fallen apart.

Regarding boiling first, I've never done that before putting them in the slow cooker confused I know that kidney beans are toxic if not cooked long enough at the right temp but I've never heard that about chickpeas. I'm still here to tell the tale so I wouldn't worry too much <laughs nervously>.

FreezerBird Wed 23-Jan-19 22:11:23

This is all marvellous, thank you. If we survive, I'll report back.

(Also I've just found the author on Twitter and asked her. Isn't the internet amazing?)

I boil mine after soaking for 30 mins and they are almost done or boil for 10 mins pop in the slow cooker and cook for 8 hrs.

messyhousetidymind Wed 23-Jan-19 22:19:37

I don't know the answer but find this a genuinely fascinating question

UrsulaPandress Wed 23-Jan-19 22:26:14

I'm never sure whether to fast boil soaked dried peas before putting them in a stew.

GottenGottenGotten Wed 23-Jan-19 22:29:43

I saw the question and was also going to mention falafel. Which is the best foodstuff ever invented by man.

You won't die from eating them, I promise. (safe in the knowledge that if you do, you won't be able to come and prove me wrong anyway.... halo)

FreezerBird Thu 24-Jan-19 08:24:53

falafel. Which is the best foodstuff ever invented by man.

Exactly. And I am nervous of deep frying so slow cooker ones I can ignore for the day.... I'll let you know. smile

Just marking my place for the outcome obituary

Yearofthemum Thu 24-Jan-19 09:23:38

Do any of you cook split peas? I simply cannot get them beyond bullet hard, and I've now tried with two separate packets, and several recipes.

Ironfloor269 Thu 24-Jan-19 09:27:39

@yearofthemum, split peas are red lentils, right? I cook them all rhr time. The truck is to add salt at the end, once the lentils are properly cooked. Adding salt in the beginning prevents the grains from cooking.

I also soak the lentils in water for as long as possible if I have the time. That also ensures that they get cooked properly.

UrsulaPandress Thu 24-Jan-19 09:29:39

Split peas are red lentils 😱

Mind blown

TooOldForThisWhoCares Thu 24-Jan-19 09:37:08

I love threads like this and i always open them. I also love chickpeas so it's a double whammy of delight for me. I've nothing else to add though except that I'm glad you got some resolution grin Oh, and are dried chickpeas really that much tastier than tinned?

Taytotots Thu 24-Jan-19 09:42:24

What cook book is that OP? Looks good.

sorenipples Thu 24-Jan-19 09:48:22

How do you cook falafel in a slow cooker?

Squ1ggle Thu 24-Jan-19 09:55:17

Split peas are definitely not red lentils https://www.thekitchn.com/whats-the-difference-between-split-peas-and-lentils-word-of-mouth-214986
