Is anyone up? I'm going INSANE WITH ANGER

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 03:08:43

There is some kind of alarm making a noise a few streets away. It has been for several hours. It's not loud per say but it's audible enough to stop me sleeping. AND IT IS JUST ONE CONTINUOUS NOTE. ARGHHHHHHHHHHH

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 03:09:44

I say a few streets away because I have a suspicion I know where it's coming from - a local car fixing/part selling type place that had an alarm on for ages a few weeks ago except that was during the day and not as loud AND NOT AT THREE IN THE FUCKING MORNING

artisanscotcheggs Wed 23-Jan-19 03:10:29

I play soft rain sounds on my amazon echo to help me sleep - it drowns out outside noise and is very calming. If you don't have a device like that, you can usually find rain sounds apps out there. It might help to try?

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 03:11:53

@artisanscotcheggs Thankyou for responding flowers I've tried my usual app which drowns it out 95% but there's this undertone if that makes sense. And if I have the app any louder then IT will stop me sleeping sad

Cauliflowersqueeze Wed 23-Jan-19 03:16:30

Oh goddddddd how infuriating. It’s the slightly different under tones that get me. You can’t block it because it’s changing. You can be sure Mr Chassis and Mr Exhaust live a few miles away and can’t hear a thing as well. 😡😡😡

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 03:18:08

I feel like Phoebe in friends.

I have to be up at 08:30 sad

I'd call 101 but they're shut. You just get a voicemail confused and tbh not sure what they could do.

I'm getting a headache now too. <reaches for codeine>

Cauliflowersqueeze Wed 23-Jan-19 03:21:49

I bet there’s loads of other people in the neighbourhood suffering as well. I don’t know what to suggest. I bet someone will end up ringing 999

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 03:24:11

Not me! I'm not THAT desperate well I am but it's a waste of resources

Have texted bestie who lives two streets from me - ie two streets closer - to see if she's up/can hear it/I'm hallucinating and a flying cupcake is coming to probe me or something

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 03:25:22

Oh my fucking god it has STOPPED

<hysterical sobs of joy>

Cauliflowersqueeze Wed 23-Jan-19 03:28:00

I had this situation about 6 months ago and was practically weeping with rage as this burglar or car alarm wouldn’t stop. Didn’t matter if my head was under the pillow or what - the siren went through everything and the sound of it kept changing from a neee nawww neeee naaaw wee-aw wee-aw wee-aw noise. It went on for over 2 hours. When it finally stopped it felt like a gift from heaven.

Cauliflowersqueeze Wed 23-Jan-19 03:28:33

Brilliant!!!!! Thank the lord!!!!

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 03:30:13

It's like my ears have been given a soothing hug and told everything will be okay.

Right, am off to bed now. before it starts again

OR NOT AS IT'S JUST STARTED AGAIN ARGHHHHH

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 03:31:34

I am not usually a violent man.

I am however sleep deprived.

The reason I have to get up early is to go food shopping with my bestie, taking us past the alarm place - sorry, car part dealer. WIBU to go complain? I might be too British actually.

ImPreCis Wed 23-Jan-19 03:38:41

If you are sure it is them then I would go in to (politely) complain. Try using in ear headphones to listen to meditation sleep music. That works for me. Good luck!

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 03:40:28

I'm 95% sure, it's the only place that has a loud enough alarm if that makes sense, it's louder than a house alarm. And it's the only business on that road except for Morrisons which is another half mile further on so can't be that. And we've heard the alarm before...

I've tried in ear headphones but they're so uncomfy to lie on a pillow with!

BayandBlonde Wed 23-Jan-19 03:43:47

I'm up because my cats have just told me, apparently, it's breakfast time. No, breakfast is 6am on the dot, they know this.

Little shits are taking the piss. They are annoying gentle aswell. Like breathing in my ear or tickling my eyes with their whiskers.

No matter how hard I try you just can't sleep through it.

So now they are doing a big shit, digging for friggin dear life and chucking cat litter all over the place......

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 03:44:32

Maybe it's cat wailing I can hear? Not an alarm? hmmgrin

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 03:48:11

RIGHT IT'S STOPPED AGAIN I'M OFF TO BED ASAP grin

will probably be back

BayandBlonde Wed 23-Jan-19 03:49:19

So it's all gone quiet.

Fed, shits done, they are now going to sleep and will not rise now until about 3 pm this afternoon......I so need to be a cat confused

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 03:51:15

you'll never fucking guess what everyone

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 03:52:52

<wonders if he could get away with calling 999 and saying he thinks someone is breaking in to the dealership place>

I'm sure it's louder hmm

ReflectentMonatomism Wed 23-Jan-19 04:01:11

Call 999 every time the alarm fires. Every time. The police will after the second time get extremely cross with the owner of the alarm.

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 04:02:16

Isn't 999 for actual emergencies? confused I don't want to get in trouble..

Alarm is now going on and off every two minutes. This is worse.

Asta19 Wed 23-Jan-19 04:04:13

Me and my DD went to Egypt a couple of years back. There was a loudspeaker near us that played the call to prayer every night, not an issue. Except...on the last night, when we needed to be up at 3am to fly home, it started at 8pm and didn’t stop. There were moments it would go quiet for a minute or two, we’d feel that sense of relief, then it would start again! Turns out it was a funeral! It finally stopped around midnight. By the end I thought I might actually go a bit mad! I’ll never forget it. I should be asleep now but woke up about an hour ago and can’t get back to sleep.

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 04:06:55

@Asta19 my sympathies!

The alarm is alternating in tones now. Is this because it's been going for so fucking long that there's some kind of alarm for the alarm?

ReflectentMonatomism Wed 23-Jan-19 04:07:06

Isn't 999 for actual emergencies?

There is an actual emergency. Someone is breaking into a nearby building. It’s not your problem if it’s a false alarm.

RebootYourEngine Wed 23-Jan-19 04:07:08

I would phone 999 if you can't get 101.

That noise and for that long is unacceptable.

FTFF Wed 23-Jan-19 04:08:31

You'll likely get a bit of a hard time if you phone 999 but ringing 101 is completely fine. The police will likely have key holders for the address listed that they can call out to switch the alarm off. It might not be a quick solution but it should hopefully get it dealt with

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 04:09:51

I don't think anyone IS breaking in, as their alarm has malfunctioned before - plus it's been going for three and a half hours.

Might call 101, will see if I have any credit...

Travelledtheworld Wed 23-Jan-19 04:10:18

I would go round with a missile launcher or similar and blow it up.

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 04:11:36

It keeps stopping for long enough for me to type a post saying it's stopped about two minutes then just as my eyes close it's off again. McColl's opens in two hours, at least they sell energy drinks..

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 04:13:22

Yep, it's off again...

Asta19 Wed 23-Jan-19 04:14:52

It’s worse in a way when that happens. As I say, I remember our relief each time we thought the noise stopped then the heart sinking frustration when it started again! I hope it stops soon and you at least get some sleep!

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 04:17:55

Probably not, but thanks for the good wishes!

I'm getting so annoyed I'm almost tearful. I just want to sleep sad Can I sue for emotional distress?

AwakeNow Wed 23-Jan-19 04:23:22

I called the police when a nearby houses alarm was on for over 15 minutes. What if the place really does have something criminal happening? And I would go speak to the place and ask them what the point of an alarm is if nobody bothers responding? Maybe gather a few other sleep deprived neighbours to go with you?

AwakeNow Wed 23-Jan-19 04:26:19

www.askthe.police.uk/content/Q75.htm

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 04:28:49

I'll go to the police station in the morning, it's just down the road. I'll see if they can get in touch with the owners about the alarm, not sure I want to storm down myself - plus not sure who I'd speak to or how gobby I'd get

AwakeNow Wed 23-Jan-19 04:32:24

www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/advice/alarms
Sounds ok to call 101. Good luck.

Redglitter Wed 23-Jan-19 04:34:43

Youd be better speaking to a manager at the premises rather than the Police. Dont expect them to have keyholder details if it goes off again. Our Force no longer holds any in the system. Even when we did have them they were massively out of date.

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 04:47:35

I will go moan Tomorrow.

So tired sad going to try and drop off again....

Stilllivinginazoo Wed 23-Jan-19 04:56:45

If it's still going get up...
I find intermittent attempts to sleep leave me more tired than just accepting it can you tell I have four children and cats that think breakfast time is at 5am hence I'm up as they've clearly set their alarm early to keep me on my toes
In your place I wouldn't visit the premises in daylight alone in case urge to throat punch is overwhelming, but I would ring and make inquiries
<Passes expression i.v>
An early nights in order for you tonightflowers

Stilllivinginazoo Wed 23-Jan-19 04:57:23

*expresso i.v

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 05:04:13

I've got a hot chocolate to soothe me to sleep....

I'll be going to bed about 8/9pm tonight I think. After a few energy drinks today...

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 05:05:37

flowers thanks for keeping me company everyone.

If there's an article on BBC news about a missile attack on a car garage, well....

SophieGiroux Wed 23-Jan-19 05:12:20

I've got a baby who keeps me awake all night every night if that makes it feel any better...she's not even a newborn she's 15!months, thought it would've got better by now 😢

Nannewnannew Wed 23-Jan-19 05:45:02

My neighbour has had his big diesel 4x4 running for over 30 minutes to clear the frost etc!! It’s soooo noisy and annoying! Some people are so selfish. 😾

Mintylizzy9 Wed 23-Jan-19 06:02:24

One of my neighbours house alarms started ringing around 7.30 LAST NIGHT and hasn’t stopped since, my head is about to explode. I had planned an early night to catch up on sleep (DS has been keeping me up) as I’m exhausted and desperate for a decent nights sleep. Have s crappy day planned at work as well and need my wits about me 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

TheLittleDogLaughed Wed 23-Jan-19 06:11:09

Hate that kind of noise. Hope you’re sleeping peacefully now OP. Have you got any earplugs, in case it happens again?

Oblomov19 Wed 23-Jan-19 06:57:46

I would have phoned the police. I find those kind of repeated noises unbearable.

Porridgeoat Wed 23-Jan-19 07:03:33

Can you visit the garage and explain their alarm kept you awake all night again and you need contact numbers for next time as you’ve literally had zero sleep

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 08:37:17

I got three hours of sleep so am decidedly less homicidal. Bed at 8pm for me tonight!

plominoagain Wed 23-Jan-19 08:46:45

If it happens again , call the council . That’s why environmental health officers have the ability to apply for a warrant ( even in the middle of the night ) and and turn the fucking thing off , because if it lasts for more than twenty minutes or so, or goes off repeatedly , it’s classed as a statutory nuisance . It’s a power that police officers don’t have , and these days , police aren’t likely to have key holders details anyway , unless they’re central station alarms ( monitored by alarm companies) in which case they call them anyway in most cases . Councils should have out of hours up till about 2am. Much more productive than calling the police in most instances I’ve found .

RiverTam Wed 23-Jan-19 08:51:55

why on earth didn't you ring the council's noise team? (apologies if I've missed that you did).

We had a BMW (relevant, because apparently they don't switch themselves off or somesuch, can't quite remember) car alarm go off at 6pm. At 11pm (so after 5 hellish hours) a load of us rang the council noise team and an hour later they were round, tracking down the owner, who lived on another street and had parked on ours as we didn't have permitted parking, the tight git. He got his comeuppance though, because someone egged his car (no, not me but I really couldn't give a shit). He never parked on our street again.

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 09:07:58

I didn't know that was a thing! blush

I mean we could well have a repeat performance tonight so have got the number ready...

Happierwithouthim Wed 23-Jan-19 09:10:01

sneaky
This is preparing you for the children in your future gringrin

I'm guessing you're not ready to joke about it just yet. Would definitely be worth phoning the business today to express your irritation angryangry

JaneJeffer Wed 23-Jan-19 09:10:41

This thread makes me glad I live in the back of beyond! Hope you get a better nights' sleep tonight Sneaky

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 09:11:46

@Happierwithouthim half an hour from now I'll have had a lovely Monster energy drink and then we can joke about it. wink

I'm going to nip into said business if it's open today and complain politely.

Happierwithouthim Wed 23-Jan-19 09:15:01

Ooh get the ultra white that's my absolute favourite, I've one in my car outside work, will I send it by pm to you?

Can you nap today? That's way better than going to bed early imo smile

SneakyGremlins Wed 23-Jan-19 09:17:22

Mine too grin

I can't really nap because I know from experience I WILL sleep through any alarm and wake up at 11pm and be up all night.... Better to be exhausted today so I can sleep tonight!

Roomba Wed 23-Jan-19 09:30:09

There is a house at the end of my road that has several large sheds full of chickens, turkeys and other birds. Note, this is not a rural area! I assume it is all legal as it's been there years. Then again I'm not about to ask as the last neighbour to complain about birds escaping all over the road got a brick through his window.

In winter it's not so bad. But in summer when the fucking cockerel crows every two minutes from around 3am... It's a wonder I haven't murdered anyone yet! Thought I'd get used to it eventually. I was wrong. It's been much worse since someone else nearby got another cockerel (why??) so they crow at each other all day and night!

ReflectentMonatomism Wed 23-Jan-19 09:32:25

Top criminal tip. Set off the alarm on Monday. Set off the alarm to Tuesday. By Wednesday it’ll be turned off, or the police will be fed up, so you can break in with impunity.

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends Wed 23-Jan-19 09:42:07

Have you seen 'Two Doors Down?

Invite the annoying neighbours in and make them endless cups of tea and bacon rolls grin

Oblomov19 Wed 23-Jan-19 11:07:23

I can't believe you are so blasé.

I'd have rung the council, now, even though it's not ringing now. I'd have rung the police, and logged it. And gone and spoken to someone at the building.

ChariotsofFish Wed 23-Jan-19 11:14:01

Most councils don’t have a 24 hour noise team anymore, thanks to austerity.

This happened to me once and I actually got up to go and find the noise. A drunk driver had attached a steering wheel lock over their car horn, not noticed and gone to bed. I was not the only one there tracing the noise. Eventually their neighbour managed to get them up to sort it out.

RiverTam Wed 23-Jan-19 11:16:38

I wonder if I should be impressed or depressed that my council does...

SneakyGremlins Tue 29-Jan-19 22:21:50

Hey everyone, YOU'LL NEVER GUESS WHAT

SneakyGremlins Tue 29-Jan-19 22:22:18

Giving it til 11 then I'm calling 101

Mintylizzy9 Tue 29-Jan-19 23:45:53

Noooo! My neighbour returned after her alarm rang for a straight 24 hours, I thought I would go insane! I called the police but they weren’t interested as I couldn’t say for sure if anyone had broken in. I found it helped to have the tv on in my bedroom on low so it masked the alarm a little so I could fall asleep. Good luck!

PIFilm Tue 29-Jan-19 23:48:02

Did you call?

Butterymuffin Tue 29-Jan-19 23:51:09

Hope 101 helped! And that you're asleep now.

Hiphopopotamus Tue 29-Jan-19 23:54:31

Oh no!

TheRattleBag Wed 30-Jan-19 00:35:26

Did you call in to the business last week after Wednesday morning's shenanigans?

SneakyGremlins Wed 30-Jan-19 00:55:17

I did! But same result as Minty really - "We'll try and get someone to check it out" so we'll see. It's turned off twice for a half an hour at a time which is juuuuuuust enough time for me to drop off - I have Netflix on quietly to try and drown it out.

THANKFULLY it's not as loud this time <tempts fate>

SneakyGremlins Wed 30-Jan-19 00:56:45

@TheRattleBag I didn't get there Wednesday and I slept fine Wednesday night (like an angel) and nothing the following few days so I HAD written it off as a one off hmm

Zacksnan Wed 30-Jan-19 00:59:30

Are they turning it off do you think? If so at least they are being woken (assuming they live off site) as well.

SneakyGremlins Wed 30-Jan-19 01:02:49

Zacksnan that makes me happy. Am I evil? grin

We have quite a bit of snow/wind here so could be that I guess?

BaronessBomburst Wed 30-Jan-19 01:05:44

That'll teach you for not opening my gifts! grin We could have PVPd for stardust and sinnoh stones.
<confuses everyone else reading the thread>

SneakyGremlins Wed 30-Jan-19 01:10:13

It was you setting it off remotely @BaronessBomburst ! shock

well can't battle actually as not ultra friends

Alarm has just shut off, again - and I'm now wide awake. ARGHHH

Zacksnan Wed 30-Jan-19 01:14:19

Go to sleep with the thought of him trudging through the snow, maybe slipping a couple of times, in his pyjamas and wellies..

BaronessBomburst Wed 30-Jan-19 01:14:55

I know, I tried sad

SneakyGremlins Wed 30-Jan-19 01:16:21

WIBU to trudge out and find where the alarm is coming from in -2 degrees and snow?

Oh for the love of disfigured quavers it's changed TONE like it did last time.

Can security alarms get low batteries?

MrsCatE Wed 30-Jan-19 01:17:48

Bugger that mate @SneakyGremlins. I am doing virtual West Side Story Gang Dance - clicky fingers, side step taps and everything - sending evils to alarm bastards xx

Zacksnan Wed 30-Jan-19 01:18:17

Could it be more than one?

SneakyGremlins Wed 30-Jan-19 01:19:41

Thanks Cat flowers

Zacksnan I hope not sad

I don't want this to become one of those "Sneaky and the twatface alarms at 1AM part 87⅓" Threads grin

Zacksnan Wed 30-Jan-19 01:20:17

Ear plugs? Got any airline amenity kits hanging around from last year’s hols that might have some?

SneakyGremlins Wed 30-Jan-19 01:21:37

Last year's holiday was a night in the Premier Inn literally half a mile up the road grin

I'll be fine, no plans tomorrow so can sleep in. Luckily I have no DC so lie ins are possible!

DemelzaPoldarksshinerrefiner Wed 30-Jan-19 01:23:08

I keep a tin of expanding foam in case my alarm ever goes rogue in the wee small hours. I will be spraying it in the bell box to hopefully diminish it’s death rattles to tolerable whilst an engineer is summoned.

Zacksnan Wed 30-Jan-19 01:23:09

If the Premier Inn is near the alarm place they ought to provide earplugs grin.

BaronessBomburst Wed 30-Jan-19 01:26:20

You could try using the disfigured Quavers?

SneakyGremlins Wed 30-Jan-19 01:26:25

<googles "industrial use expanding foam near me">

Premier Inn is in the other direction. If I had any spare cash I'd check in for the night!

I do appreciate the company smileflowers

SneakyGremlins Wed 30-Jan-19 01:28:17

The reason I didn't go into the business a couple days ago as I was passing is I'm not entirely sure where it's come from, I can just sort of vaguely guesstimate the distance it's coming from if that makes sense? And that distance matches the business which has had an alarm blaring through the day before but I didn't think to record it for comparison purposes.

SneakyGremlins Wed 30-Jan-19 01:34:07

I've just realised something. It's been a week.

Is this going to be a thing every Wednesday????

sad

BaronessBomburst Wed 30-Jan-19 01:41:25

Fire alarm goes off at DS' athletics training at 19:20 every Monday.
Could be.

(I'm off to sleep with the giant Pikachu)

LaurelAndMardy Wed 30-Jan-19 01:41:35

Arghh no!! So annoying.

SneakyGremlins Wed 30-Jan-19 01:42:23

That's an acceptable time though.

Going to try and binge watch a season of Drag Race get some sleep. Not holding out much hope...

Zacksnan Wed 30-Jan-19 01:44:23

At least if it’s going off at the same time you can inform the environmental people. Or tape it yourself.

You won’t be the only one complaining.

SneakyGremlins Wed 30-Jan-19 01:45:46

Well my best friend who lives closer than I do by two streets claims not to hear it hmm

SapphireSeptember Wed 30-Jan-19 01:47:17

Sneaky Argh, that sounds horrible! Hope you get some shut eye. (Or a rocket launcher, that'll sort it out.)

Baroness A giant Pikachu you say? I am intrigued...

Poppins2016 Wed 30-Jan-19 02:18:48

There's often a sticker in the window of an alarmed building, with contact details for the alarm company. Might be worth calling to notify/complain (if you do decide to get out of bed to investigate where the noise is coming from).

Wigwambam10 Wed 30-Jan-19 02:36:36

I thought cockrals were not allowed in residential areas.
