The rise of the far right

Is anyone else concerned about the rise of the far right.

I just read that Marion Marechal Le Pen will be invited to speak at the Oxford Union following her aunt Marine Le Pen, Ann Coulter, Katie Hopkins, Tommy Robinson.

It's terrifying.

History is repeating itself.

I'm trying very hard not to doom-monger, but I think we will see a war and a holocaust before 2030.

I find the hard left far more frightening.

I am concerned by the rise of all extremist politics. Politics is becoming increasing polarised and it’s very concerning. The far left is just as bad (often worse in practice) than the far right. The worst thing is that the two are reactionary. They whip themselves into a France over the other extreme not realising that they are the same thing dressed up in different colours.

The Oxford Union is a debating society that has a tradition of inviting controversial speakers for debates. I don't think this tells us anything about the rise of the far right.

Oxford union has invited them, Tommy Robinson has already spoken there, don't see an issue, most people understand that the only way to defeat such ideas is to bring them out in public.

Those that try and inflect superior knowledge with comments such as 1930's muddy the waters between center right and the true far right.

If your concerned about the rise in extremism on all sides then YANBU if however you only think it's one sided (and the far right is used liberally these days) then YABU

Too many people too busy telling other people what they can do, say and think to see that they are actually causing problems that didn't actually exist. Both far right and far left.

Don't worry about the hard left.

They will disagree about who brings the Molotov cocktails, need a committee meeting to organise the stones (for throwing), have a debate about what non imperialist music should be played and argue bitterly about who will stay in the crèche for the childcare while parents riot.

I agree with those posters who say extremism in politics is the problem. The left has been associated with anti semitism for too long.

My parents were immigrants and I was born here, and even though I am British, its exhausting to have to prove that I am educated, I work and I integrate. That was my concern of the far right, it seeks to divide communities....and frighteningly it is succeeding in places.

No, they label everything that isn't far left as far right these days. It's like a dog whistle. Noting is central left or central right. Your either far left or Hitler according to the media. There is no in between.

Actually Hitler is a bad example. Politically speaking Hitler was far-left.

Define 'far right' though. I am told that I am 'far right', because I don't have any time for the touchy feely liberal bollocks that so many spout now; because I voted Leave and think a managed no deal exit is the best thing we could do. I don't think you could get a cigarette paper (see, I can do PC), between the Blairites and certain members of the Tory party. I think Cameron was Blair #2.

I dare say majority of brits feel more comfortable with the far right than the far left. It will be some years before we get to more moderate political climate again. Grin and bear until then.

A lot of years considering political forecasts predict that generation X and Y are going to be the most conservative generations since WW2. That's what happens when the left becomes the insitution. It becomes something to rebel against. A way to forge their own identities. As young people have done since the dawn of time. Swings and round-a-bouts.

At least we know who to blame, I'm sure that makes it slightly better. And yes I agree that after so many years of leftist governments it is time to swing back to right again as an act of rebellion. I guess we don't have any choice anyways.

How many post war governments have been Labour?

22 years in total compared to 40+ years of the Tories - I can't remember the exact figure.

Add that to institutions formed by the Tories and centuries of Tory/ Whig rule. The left is far from institutional in the U.K.

Socially speaking, yes. And part of that is the thanks to the sensitivity of the far-left. If you tell kids that there are racists and sexists on every corner and then they are going out into the world and not see it in their everyday lives they are going to push back against it. It's going to be like the Evangelical's of the 90's and early 2000's. They doninated the social atmosphere but when their children got out into the real world what they saw was not what they were taught and they rejected it and moved in the opposite direction. That's what's going to happen with left-wing politics if we don't start centering it more.

Politically and institutionally the right has retained control but socially the left is in charge? Really?

We are a country where Trade Unions are under constant attack, we have a monarchy, social inequality is widening, we have a regressive tax system, social security scrounges are villainised, racism is on the rise and we still have a state religion!
That is really, really not a left wing society by any stretch of the imagination quite the opposite in fact.

The left has had a say for the first time in our history. The left has exerted some influence. And the pitiful amount of influence it has had is being used as a reason for all societies ills.

I have concerns about certain aspects of a certain religion. This apparently makes me racist and far right. At one time this would have been thought of as common sense.
