WTF things you used to do and wonder how you're still alive....

I've just been reading the thread about people not being able to do simple jobs around the home e.g, changing a bulb/plug, and it got me thinking about when I was around 7-8 years old, not only being fully competent and able to rewire an electrical plug, but also jamming into the electric sockets wires from the video player in my bedroom that didn't have a plug (blue wire into left bottom wall socket hole, brown wire into right bottom wall socket hole) and the tv plug kind of wedging them in over the top after seeing my DF doing the same thing with other small electricals.

WTF did I do this? I thought at the time it was probably ok as DF did the same when a plug was missing, but part of me knew deep down it was wrong! TBF DF did go full on gobshite tell me off when he noticed, and unplugged them, muttering he would 'get me a plug', but then forgot, so I never received said plug, so just jammed the wires in again. I would go barmy if my dc did this, and am cringing now at nearly frying myself and thinking I could have caused a house fire too, (to be fair, this was early 80s, so slack on health and safety).

Please tell me I'm not the only knob to have done something so stupid, I've only just thought of this for the first time in decades and feel so daft. How did I not see what I could have done? Blush

Sitting in the window ledge of my bedroom with my legs dangling out...3 story old Victorian town house Shock I was catching the last of the sun’s rays. I did this regularly. I would go nuclear if I caught my boys doing it!

You may be too young to remember public information films from the 60s and 70s. To hopefully make you feel better there was one showing a worker in a factory who also didn't have a plug for his drill whatever, so used matchsticks to poke the wires in the socket. Grown ups really used to do this. The film stopped as he started to thrash from the shock. Indeed I worked in a place where a piece of wood and duct tape was applied to a broken switch to keep a machine permanently on. Funny old world!

I once ate some grapes without washing them first (I grew up post 9/11 do we weren’t allowed to do anything or go anywhere without supervision).

I spent about five years of my life shoving coke up my nose, several times a week, collapsed a few times, all sorts of bad situations. Ended up with a huge problem, moved to a different country to get out of it.

No idea how I'm still here.
Sends shivers down my spine, thinking about it.

Slept on strangers floors after gigs, hitch hiked, went home with strange blokes that i got off with at nightclubs. All sorts of stuff really, it was all fine, but could have gone so wrong. Meh

Drinking too much - copping off with strangers and not knowing how I got home. Scares me senseless now!

I spent a lot of time at uni hanging out in dodgy places doing lines. Turns out the people we used to hang out with were Albanian gangsters.

One time I got so drunk in Bangkok, our by myself that I agreed to go to a party with two of the Thai bar guys. I suddenly sobered up when I realised they had taken me to a pay by an hour motel. Luckily i made my excuses and got out of the situation. Grabbed a taxi home and the taxi driver wouldn't take any of my money because he just wanted me to be safe.

I look back at some of the stuff I used to do in my early teens and think wtf. How did I not end up dead. Sad

Grandparents lived on a first floor flat. I used to squeeze under the gap on the balcony railing and drop to the grass outside. Would have lost my mind if ever I saw my dcs do that!

As students we would carry on like female members of Jackass sometimes. Mostly the usual getting so drunk we’d black out with no memories of the night before. Or trying to fight a bouncer Shock
I also used to walk along a railway line as a shortcut home but as visibility was good and I knew the timetable well I didn’t consider it risky.

Climbed the mud cliffs near Bridport. Three hundred feet of crumbling shite, that would shed a layer after every heavy rain. At the time I weighed about six stone, but I was still lucky to survive. The week after we returned home, someone slightly heavier was killed doing it.

I knew I could rely on you lovely lot to make me feel better about being so silly when I was younger. It really makes you question yourself looking back doesn't it? With what I did, I wondered why I got away with it for so many years without anything bad happening, and it not just being one random act of bad judgement which could have gone so badly wrong iyswim?
Although saying that looking at a lot of the answers here I do wonder if the risk I took was one of the 'saner' ones Grin

Shove cocaine up my nose. Repeatedly. Very lucky not to come to any harm. Don't do it any more!

We used to film our own Jackass shows, mostly involving sledding down the stairs or down a busy hill (no snow) running in front of cars to see if we could outrun them. Fucking ridiculous stuff.
Also made some very dodgy decisions when drunk about who to go home with, taken drugs from strangers, got so drunk in Ibiza that we feel asleep outside on some benches in th busiest part of town. Horrible looking back and I do wonder how I’m here tbh b

In a treeless street, I solved the problem of where to practice hanging upside down by my knees...the upstairs bedroom window sill. Hanging out upside down over concrete.
Eventually a neighbour told my mother and I copped it :D

A wide variety of recreational drugs in my late teens and early twenties. Which also put me in some very dangerous situations. I used to accept lifts from my similarly wasted friend in his car and his driving was ridiculous we nearly crashed loads. I used to just wander off with strangers. I was briefly homeless and used to hang around a bar just going home with different men for the night so I'd have somewhere to sleep eat and have a shower.
I used to just go on random adventures whilst off my face which I thought was funny at the time... I once got the megabus down to London from Cornwall... but when I got there I had no money, no phone and no idea where I was and I knew no one there... again I just tagged along with random people mainly men.
My family never knew where I was so no one would have noticed for quite some time if I'd gone missing.

Recently discovered DS was charging his toothbrush by shoving a broken chopstick in the earth of the plug and then pushing the shaver charger in to the two live holes.

He learnt it on YouTube Hmm
