If asked for something edible for Christmas, what would you take that to mean?

Would you think I meant chocolate, biscuits or a hamper or something?

Or a few own brand tins of Lidl baked beans and spaghetti loops etc...

Because the latter is what I got from my sister. I prefer to give and never expect anything but she asked what I wanted so I just said don't worry about getting anything big, just something edible will be fine.

I feel I should have been more specific but never expected it! A box of Maltesers would have felt more Christmassy than tins of baked beans. It's the only thing I had to open and it was a bit of a shit day anyway, not to sound ungrateful... and I thanked appropriately. Xmas Sad

Anyone else get something a bit... Off?

Wtf? I’m sorry but this did make me chuckle is your sis on glue? Who buys someone find if beans for Xmas?

Weird behaviour it was obvious something like biscuits/chocolate was what you meant

I would have assumed you meant treat food of some description.

Hopefully the tins are things you like so you will be able to use them. Perhaps you could spend the amount they cost on something else more festive.

I would think she was making a joke maybe?

You'd think so! All my family were laughing about it while I stood there like... [santa]

I think it would have come to about £3 but I did just treat myself a new hard drive for my laptop. 😂

I would think she was making a joke maybe?

I wish, it would have been funny then! But it was serious. Grin

Did she maybe forget and just grab something from her cupboard? (Not that it makes it any better - sorry Christmas was a bit shit OP)

Is your sister very literal?

That's really bizarre.
I would have got you a tin of biscuits or a small hamper etc.
I got given a shower cap for Christmas once by a friend's mother. I was v proud I managed to keep a straight face and be polite...Grin

Hamper, chocolates, treats

Not classic food bank components no

Is she normally so literal?

I'd take it to mean posh chocolates, fancy biscuits, hamper of luxury items with a Christmassy feel. That kind of thing. Not just literally food you can eat no matter what it is. She may as well wrapped up a cabbage.

I got given a shower cap for Christmas once by a friend's mother. I need a new shower cap, but wouldn't want one as a present.

For edibles, I would expect something like chocolates, nice chutneys or a tin of posh (or even ordinary) biscuits.

I once asked a relative for "something for the garden" expecting a plant or similar. I got a bottle of fertilizer. Non-organic, even though he knew our garden is 100% organic.

I did use it actually, it was pretty handy, Grin

I’d not expect store cupboard basics, that’s for sureXmas Grin
Posh/festive chocolate, chutney, biscuits etc, not the ingredients for beans on toast

I would be genuinely offended.

A food bank parcel is exactly what it felt like.

I don't think she is normally so literal, but yeah, may as well have wrapped up a cabbage (anyone seen Very Annie Mary? It reminds me of that scene "father bought me a cabbage Sad").

I'm meant to be the literal one if anything haha.

Honestly, I am. I feel insulted. Like how little must she think of me? I'd prefer nothing.

Any bad history betwern you two? It's absolutely bizarre to choose cheapest items she could find. Like she's making a statement?

GaraMedouar · 26/12/2018 17:46

Bizarre. Edible definitely means chocolates or maybe nice blue cheese or something. Not baked beans!

Is it possible that she was trying to be nice / helpful ? If she knows you have not got a lot of money tinned staple foods are better / more practical the luxury choc or biscuit

Lidl baked beans for Christmas?
Surely they have to be (deep gravelly voice) Marks and Spencer baked beans

Oh no! Yes, I love that film. Perhaps that's what I thought of.

Does she think maybe that you are short of money, so food like baked beans would be better than chocolate?
I would've taken your request to mean chocolate, biscuits or some form of treat food.

My idea of edible is a little different. My Ds2 has bought me, on various Christmases, a whole belly of pork ( it was like a cape Grin ). 40lbs of boneless skinless chicken thighs, 35lbs of pork shoulder and this year 10lbs of dry aged grass fed steaks. Hes a goodun

She might have at least got you a loaf of bread so you could make toast to go with them.

But yeah, I’d have thought a box of chocs or nice biccies as an edible gift.
