What quirks do you have?

I recently came across thinker Alain de Boton, and was very taken with his statement that each of us is "deeply crazy".
With that in mind, what quirks do you have?

A family member once mentioned that he was always up by 6 and since then, I used to set my alarm for 5:58 so I would "win" obviously I never told him that!
Likewise when working from home, if I was still in my pajamas at say 7, and I'd hear a neighbour going off to work I'd get almost a feeling of jealousy - they'd got dressed before me!
I've mellowed a little.

What secret or not so secret quirks do you have?

I must be deeply normal.

I can't have an empty plate in front of me. The moment I've finished eating, it has to be moved away (generally onto my Husbands plate if we're eating out as he's faster at eating). I also can't sleep with the buttons on he duvet cover anywhere other than the foot of the bed. I don't think either is particularly bizarre nowi
I think about it.

I have to smell any cup before I use it which other people think is a bit strange hmm

I’m in a competition with the other people in my gym class. I need to faster, stronger than all of them to “win” my session.

I never finish my plate. Small concession to my teenage food crazies that I now have a better handle on.

Can’t sleep unless I’m on the left side of the bed

I smell the fabric conditioner before I put it into the washing machine. Every single time.

My food can't touch on my plate. Even lasagne, I have to separate out all of the layers grin

Also if I'm really stressed or flustered about something I'm doing, I sing 'do you like pinã coladas' over and over.

Yep, a little bit batshit over bear

<takes notes to expand own quirks>

I always have to sit on the outside chair, I can’t take the item at the front of a shelf in a shop, even things that aren’t date sensitive so not that.

When walking home from work years ago I used to race the other people. I would pick someone in front and then try to overtake them.

I have things I like to do a certain way but then I get worried that I'm getting too set in my ways, and do them differently even if I don't like it as much. E.g. I have a couple of "preferred" seats on the bus, but I don't like sitting in them too many times in a row, in case I get to the point where I can't be happy unless I can have one of them, and I sit somewhere completely different that doesn't feel as "me" somehow. And I don't like having the same thing every time in a cafe or restaurant, even if it's my favourite by far, for the same reason.

I don't like crowds, noise or changes!
At work i turn my ringer to the lowest volume and see the light flash and i answer it.
My colleague has her phone on her left so next to my ears and she has hers on loud. I jump out of my skin when it rings.
I set an alarm for finish time at work. When it rings i end whatever it is I'm doing and i go home.
I don't mix my work life with my out of work life and I am intensely private and don't like discussing my weekend.
I suffer terrible anxiety about everything and wake at 4am worrying.
I time my coffee making to ensure I'm alone in the kitchen. It is small and people are noisy.
I take my phone to the printer so if there's a queue i don't have to do small talk. Awkward!

Kemer2018 Fri 14-Dec-18 20:15:19

I forgot about the bubble wrap. If i see it in a shop, i have to pop. My partner leaves me, he's embarrassed.
At work, if a ranter repeats themselves more than twice, I'm bored and just stay silent on the phone until they give up. I get their message and don't have problems retaining their information. Bore off please.

I blow on cold food

BloodiedButUnbowed Fri 14-Dec-18 20:20:34

No one’s allowed to talk to me or interact in any way with me while I’m eating cereal. I don’t know why, I just get upset if they do!
Also, I’m frightened of man made fibres. When the kids leave their yucky polyester blazers on the sofa I have to ask them to move them before I can sit down! My family are used to checking, when we go clothes shopping, whether I can touch a particular fabric – then I have to stretch out a tentative finger to check. If it’s just a bit bad I say no, but if it’s really bad then I run away cringing and clutching my hand is if it’s on fire! Strangely my DD has the same reaction, but she’s scared of fabrics that i’m fine with and vice versa. It means that when we hug we have to quickly inspect each other to see if it safe to touch. smile

I cannot sleep without an eye mask, ear plugs and a hot water bottle- no matter the weather. And naked. Honestly cannot sleep unless these conditions are met. I am the biggest diva sleeper ever

canibehereifimnotamum Fri 14-Dec-18 21:45:22

And beans on toast or scrambled eggs on toast- they cannot touch the toast! At all!!!!!

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere Fri 14-Dec-18 21:52:32

I can not drink tea from any cup that isn't white inside.

Both my feet have to be the same - if one slipper falls off I have to kick the other one off straight away.

When I'm cold I keep touching my nose in the hope that it will feel warm.

onelittleclara Fri 14-Dec-18 22:06:25

I like to sniff the fridges in Currys/John lewis

ohwellinthatcasetryprunes Fri 14-Dec-18 22:07:54

If I'm eating or drinking anywhere out, I like to have my back to the wall otherwise I feel really uneasy.

EyeDrops Fri 14-Dec-18 22:07:54

If I'm walking in town or shops, I have to step on things 'evenly'. For instance, on a tiled floor, if my right foot keeps landing on the cracks but not my left, I feel really weird so have to jig my pace to even it out and step on cracks with my left foot too. Same for paving slabs that are different shades, I need to step on an even spread of light/dark with each foot.

It doesn't seem as crazy as it looks written down....!!!

EyeDrops Fri 14-Dec-18 22:09:38

And as for stairs in shops etc with random hazard stripes on the edge of every few steps... same problem, have to step on the same number with each foot. I'm bonkers aren't I blush

Mum2jenny Fri 14-Dec-18 22:11:06

Buttons at bottom of duvet cover seems normal to me. Why would they be anywhere else??

Bigonesmallone3 Fri 14-Dec-18 22:12:06

I get anxious in car parks and over think where I leave my car, not because of my parking but because of others
I can't look at anything dead
I don't like crowds
I love marmite and cucumber together

barnconversion5 Fri 14-Dec-18 22:12:39
