So a drunken night resulted in this idea...

We've thought

Babycham/snowballs
Vodka martinis with an olive
Starter
Fondue
Cheese and pineapple hedgehog
Devils on horseback
Main
Coq au vin? A really yellow curry? What about vegetarian? Were there any of those in the 70s🤣??
Dessert
Black Forest gateau
Something else?

Any more ideas welcome.

Prawn cocktail or vol au vents?

Spaghetti Bol was very exotic in the 70 s. My big sister went to her friends for tea, the mum was an artist and very bohemian. She had her first spaghetti Bol and came back and told us about “ white spaghetti “ because we only knew about the orange kind in tins!

Prawn cocktail with iceberg lettuce and triangles of brown bread.
Steak Diane.
Ratatouille for vegetarians.
Trifle made with Swiss roll and sherry.

You've also forgotten Campari and lemonade.

Sounds fun, hope you have a kaftan and massive hair!

Your drinks are the equiv of adolescent drinks nowadays. I remember Gin&It, sherry, wine and after dinner stickies.

My mother's specialities were:

Salmon mousse
Vichysoisse
Lobster bisque

Chicken kiev (unusual then and you had to joint 3 or 4 birds for the breast)
Pork chops with orange (delish)
Boeuf bourgignon
Stuffed boned shoulder of lamb
Guard of Honour

Baked alaska; or a
Chocolate bombe (moussey and minty)
Cheesecake - home made

Was bloody marvellous and all food i still like.

Fondue!

I would def do prawn cocktail or prawn and avocados. Classic 70s (but still yum). Beef stroganoff for main. Then creek brûlée or crepes Suzette.

Creme obviously not creek!

OnTheRoses, I agree with you, I must be stuck in a 70s time warp as it is still the sort of food I eat regularly Grin.

Oooh - or duck a l’orange.

Cubes of cheese and pineapple on cocktail sticks stuck into a grapefruit hedgehog style (though these were probably only popular at kids parties).

Prawn cocktail
Scampi in the basket
Black forest gateau

Atmosphere is everything. You'll need to slow burn a kilo or 2 of tobacco throughout the evening, turn off the heating and enlist a couple of middle-aged men to spend the evening openly letching and groping the younger women. Throw in a powercut or two and have at least one person drive home absolutely shit-faced whilst his friends joke about how he's a better driver drunk than sober.

Definitely the pineapple & cheese hedgehog, cocktail sausages on toothpicks, triffle (with ladies fingers, Birdseye custard, tinned fruit, red jelly and cream on top) and twiglets...it’s NOT a party without those things!

Spam fritters
Rice pudding
Egg sandwiches

Can I come? Got married in 79 and dinner parties were "the thing" at that time. My tuna pate and thin toast is still the stuff of legendGrin

Tootrues post really made me laugh, spot on, though some of the now much older men I know still think it's ok to drink and driveAngry

We got a microwave in 1980, revolutionary.

Just watch Abigails Party and you're there.
