Fake HMRC scam

Queenofthedrivensnow · 23/11/2018 14:18

Just been very shaken by what I believe to be a scam call alleging they were hmrc. Telling me I should instruct a criminal solicitor as I was about to be served at my place of work.

They knew my name but that's about all.

Voicemail from 'Linda white at hmrc' I called them as cms leave a similar vm.

I was accused of tax evasion and not checking my p60 for paying correct tax.

No letters ever just this weird call.

My manager had to calm me down and google the number 01865600489 and scam warnings came up straight away.

Please be aware!!

Anyone else had this one?

Flowers Fuckin scumbagging twats.
Not that they give a holy hoot but that could terrify someone into a bloody cardiac arrest.
Thank Goodness you googled the number. I wonder how many people have fallen for this.

I thought I was wise to all this. I hardly ever get scam calls only those you have been in an accident.

I got a call from Taiwan today. No voice on other end, as I hung up I got an urgent email from "Amazon Security" saying they were trying to contact me. Unfortunately for them, I checked the senders email address, quite the odd choice for Amazon Security, I'd have thought they'd use an @amazon domain at least.

Scamming twats; and no, I'm not calling back that number.

Yep, Linda has called me to. Twice on the same day, so be warned you may get another call. Slightly different message, but similar contents - I cant remember exactly what, but since I don't work I'd have remembered that bit. My number must have been slightly different - didnt come up when i googled it.
I've emailed the details to HMRC spam line: [email protected]

I had the same a few weeks ago and I nearly went into cardiac arrest! Was told that I had to call Linda as I was about to be called to court for tax fraud ! I thought I was wise to scammers, it sounded so official . I called the number back twice but no answer, so penny dropped a bit. Called HMRC, spoke to someone immediately and they logged it and confirm it was a scam. They directed me to a gov website where you register the phone number.

But that can easily be faked. Just because it says Amazon doesn't mean it came from there.

Who Called Me who-called.co.uk is a good website to check out unknown phone numbers, possible scam calls etc

I’ve had a very stern sounding man, like a 70 s voice over telling me I’d committed tax fraud, and leaving a case number. I knew I hadn’t soo wasn’t bothered, but it was a pleasure to delete his message. He’s left 2 or 3 now.
Was it a voice mail op, or an actual person?

I’ve had this as well. A couple of times. It’s really horrible.

I’m beginning to regard every call on my landline number is a scam until proven otherwise!
The ones that really piss me off are the recorded messages. Come on, Scammers, if you want me to take you seriously (haha) then at least put the bloody hours in. When Brian, with a very dodgy accent, wants to fix my internet, at least I can play him along for a while (if i’m that bored), or tell him to find Jesus or fuck off in real time.
Official government departments only contact you with unpleasant letters by post, usually on a Friday, so you can worry about them over the weekend unable to ring them until Monday.

I got this too! As soon as she said courthouse I knew it was a scam.

I blocked the number so no idea if they called again.

She said courthouse on the message but as I said - cms leave messages 'from hmrc'.

Was a grumpy sounding maybe Asian man but hard to tell.

He said tax evasion and mentioned Plymouth magistrates. That's the bit that threw me sober that's across the road!!

He said I would be served in my workplace and that I needed criminal lawyer.

I was more thrown because he didn't ask me for any details he knew mine! Well where I live and my name.

Saw a talk on cybersecurity over the summer with the lady who runs the dot-co-dot-uk domain database. They have to be ever vigilant for the establishment of dodgy domain registrations (like HMRC_fraud . co . uk) and traffic going to those. Nothing illegal in setting up a domain with that name, but they'll be watching

Hmrc will only ever contact you by letter in a brown envelope, it is one of the trending scams

Report
dudsville · 23/11/2018 16:51

They've left messages on my answering machine. I also once downloaded a virus that was similar. You can see how they will get some to pay.

Yeah I had this a few weeks ago! It's a really horrible message and I imagine very distressing for anyone who believes it to be real Angry That reminded me to send the message to the phishing address that pp has advised, thanks.

The number I got a call on was a clone of the hmrc number! Spoke to them on live chat who confirmed no reason to talk to me etc. Some people will try anything!!!

Report
LoisDevine · 23/11/2018 17:02

Yes, they've cloned the HMRC number which is really scary and will fool some of the more vulnerable people, even with the HMRC number coming up it is DEFINITELY a scam

Matey didn't get far enough with me to demand any money but I see now that's where it was going. Tempted to call back and play along and record the call

If you google the hmrc scam they have an email you can send the detail to.

I had the same call today, it’s about the 4th time, always from a different number.

I used to work for HMRC and, if you were in deep enough shit for them to be issuing criminal proceedings, you wouldn't be warned "we're on our way to serve you", they would just show up and serve you. HMRC also don't conduct this over the phone out of the blue like that, initial contact would be made by letter and then if telephone conversations were to be had you'd have a direct telephone number you could call along with reference numbers, etc.

IF YOU'RE EVER IN DOUBT then ask then to send you their query in writing. If they say they cannot then take their name and department (all genuine officers will give you this), ask them to leave a note on your record about the call, Google the correct contact number, and call it. Do not use any phone number given to you by the suspected scammer.

I got one last week and when I asked where she was based she said "HMRC HQ" but couldn't tell me where that was so I kept asking her technical questions using HMRC interal jargon until she told me to fuck off and hung up Grin

My mum had to deal with someone victim of this scam. Unfortunately, it was £20k that they will never get back.

I had a similar voicemail the other day. They didn’t know my name though and just kept referring to me as YOU. I think my call was also from a Linda. Deleted that fucker.

Do they say "pay x and we will stop proceeding" - just trying to work out how they make money?

I got the same voicemail message this morning!
