Was it normal to be caned in the 70s?

I was caned often as a child by my mother. Df had no part in it. Still stays with me to this day.

Our head teacher at high school had one in his office. I don't think it was used often.

This was 1979- 1984

But no. Not at home.

Ex H says that his parents used a belt on him and his brothers though. 😶

No. The whole school was horrified when a boy was slippered in assembly for ‘borrowing’ a milk float. This was primary school sometime between 1976 - 80

No. Born in 1970 and only ever knew 1 boy to get corporal punishment, and that was 3 strokes of a slipper in 1980.
My friend is 5 years older than me and grew up a few hundred miles away. He was regularly caned on the hands at secondary school and said ot just made him more defiant.

It was very common in my catholic primary school, I was caned twice at school.
I don’t think it was normal to be caned at home though. Our mum smacked us often but not with implements.

I grew up in the 70s and the threat of caning at school was definitely there but I don't remember it ever actually happening. We were smacked at home but not caned, no.

Not at home but at school, there was a group of boys, who included my late BiL , who thought it was macho to get caned. I think they were the only ones who ever got it

It was used at my primary school late sixties but not so much by the mid seventies. And not at all at home. Only at school. A smack was pretty normal, on the backside or leg, in most of my friends' homes.

Classmates were still getting ‘belted’ with the leather strap in my Scottish high school til 1984/5 I think. I remember 3 or 4 occurrences but it was getting less and less common. DH says it was a lot more common when he was at high school in the late 70s but he went to a v rough school!

Never at home, or even at primary school! A smack on the bum was pretty common though from our parents. Not a big deal or particularly traumatic.

Caning was threatened often but very rarely used at secondary school. I shudder to recall the caning scenes in books - remember “Danny the Champion of the World”? Dahl was clearly very anti-caning. And Amy getting caned in “Little Women”. Ouch.

Just me then. I can't remember what I had done wrong...

I was hit on the hand with a ruler at infant school for copying, caning was still in place when I started Senior school in 1974 but had stopped before I left in 1979 after a new head teacher started.

My brother was twice in the 80's. Once for drinking one of my parents' miniature liqueurs at about the age of 10 and then, once again at 15 for bunking off school. My father caned him both times with lots of encouragement from my mother. I didn't like both my parents for a long time after that. My big brother meant the world to me and it was awful seeing him so upset.

dingit, it sounds more like it was your mother who was doing wrong. flowers

Not at home but cane or slipper was used at primary school. At home it was a smack with an open hand on the backside or the back of the legs.

FurryDogMother Mon 18-Jun-18 22:20:41

Never at school or at home. I didn't really get into it until the 90s ;)

Northumberlandlass Mon 18-Jun-18 22:22:27

I remember the whole school being gathered to watch 3 lads get caned! Probably early 80’s

Noqont Mon 18-Jun-18 22:23:05

Yes it was at secondary school.

Fresta Mon 18-Jun-18 22:23:43

I've never heard of a parent caning a child.

The odd smack on the bottom for being really naughty from my mum but not regularly and never with an object!

My school gave a smack with a ruler on the palm of the hand for severe misbehaviour- only ever remember one child getting this though before it was decided to get rid of it and issue detentions instead.

Our school used the cane in the 70s but it was feared and rarely used. I was regularly walloped with a hairbrush or wooden spoon by my mum and nan. My mum would rattle the kitchen drawer and shout 'where's that wooden spoon?' which sent me hiding under the dining table. Good times!

I was hit on the head with a bible in primary for talking in class.

The belt was in full force in primary and secondary.

I heard some were made to eat soap for swearing.

Was hit a handful of times at home.

Yes in my primary school two particular male teachers enjoyed slippering children. Sadistic bastards. Cane was present at secondary school and used occasionally until corporal punishment was banned in schools in the 80s

MonumentVal Mon 18-Jun-18 22:26:00

Late 70s, nice little private primary, one, maybe two boys got caned in the four years I remember. The one got caned three times as well as having to stand up almost every week to explain his Bad Mark in assembly, so the sensible head stopped the csning as it clearly wasn't helping and I think stopped him getting so many Bad marks too. The teachers might lash out with a ruler or slap, informally, but generally were lovely.
