Posted on Travel but no replies - will try here!
Myself and OH are looking for a beach holiday for next year for us and DS5, we have settled on Greece but not sure where to look at as neither of us have been before.Any recommendations are appreciated! Best islands or any resorts worth checking out?

We're not bothered about being able to get pissed and throwing DS into a daycare as this seems to be the only advice our friends have given us hmm, would enjoy somewhere near something historic or maybe somewhere snorkeling.

Crete. Near Chania, not Heraklion. The villages in the mountains are beautiful and the small coastal resorts are charming.

Echoing Crete near or in Chania, we had a lovely time, although sans children. Also look at Loutro, car free, friendly, walking, boating, nice food.

I’ve stayed in Stalis in Crete. Gorgeous beach, some lovely restaurants and cafes, and you can easily get around nearby places for walking and excursions.

Corfu is beautiful! Kassiopi, corfu town, ipsos. Hire a jeep and drive around to find beautiful little coves. Been twice now and can't wait to go again, you won't be disappointed. smile

I spent many years on Corfu - the North East is beautiful and very child friendly (I would recommend self catering).. but the beaches are pebble, unless you head to Roda, which is quiet but nice - Sidari is a little livelier but attracts younger party groups high season. San Stefanos is stunning but you will need a hire car or boat(not too expensive).

North West is also lovely!

I've just come back from Corfu and it was perfect! We were staying in a villa in Kalami which is beautiful. There are apartments close to the beach in booking.com too. A few tavernas on the beach and you can get a water taxi to other tavernas in other bays if you call them and book.

We hired a boat for the day to enjoy the best snorkelling but you can snorkel from the beach - just not so many fish!

There are also lovely beaches near Kassiopi but we found the town a bit too commercialised for our own taste.

Kefalonia, Skala. I've been six times. Great sea swimming, wonderful food. Boat cruises, water sports. You can drive around easily. May or September is the best time, it's too hot the rest of the summer for me. I've been to Kalamia in Corfu. I find Corfu too commercialised. Never been to Crete though.

Kefalonia. Just beautiful and so lush and green for a Greek island. Not as touristy as some of the other Ioanian islands (Kos and Corfu). Have been a few times and there are beaches by all the places we've been. Its a large shingle beach in Skala but it's still picturesque.

Went to Kassiopia years ago (I'm talking about maybe 15 years back) and didn't like it at all. I'm sure it's better now hmm

Another vote for Corfu, Roda and Sidari are fab xx

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 Wed 13-Jun-18 10:34:55

Another vote for Kefalonia!

The South of Rhodes is beautiful. We went in June and it was really quiet.

I chuck my kids in childcare for two hours per day- to keep them out of the searing heat

Your attitude to people accessing kids clubs is very off as is your condescending tone towards your friends.

eyycarumba Wed 13-Jun-18 10:45:50

@Melliegrantfirstlady how is it off or condescending? The only suggestions my friends (who have no children) make is to go somewhere I can put my son in a daycare then get drunk. I'm not opposed to sending him somewhere for a couple of hours over the holiday, but I'm not looking to book anywhere with that specific facility for that specific reason.

eyycarumba Wed 13-Jun-18 10:47:58

Thank you all for suggestions, lots to look out for. We'd be planning to go April/May time, not sure how busy it gets around then

Frosty66612 Wed 13-Jun-18 10:52:41

It’s fairly busy but nowhere near what it’s like during the summer months. The weather can be a bit hit or miss then though. We had heavy rain for 3 days when we went in May once. The rest of the week was about 24 degrees so it was nice and warm but not really hot

AdaColeman Wed 13-Jun-18 11:05:07

Skiathos is perfect for a family holiday with a small child, though Crete is also lovely.
April is quite early in the season for Greece, so when you book, check that any facilities which are important to you, will be open and up and running.

Peanutbuttercups21 Wed 13-Jun-18 11:08:00

Lefkas or Kefalonia

GreatDuckCookery Wed 13-Jun-18 11:11:13

Just NOT Zante. Awful place.

Crete is nice and love Skiathos.

PanPanPanPing Wed 13-Jun-18 11:20:05

I agree that May would be better than April.

For somewhere on the mainland, have a look at Parga on the west coast. My recommendation would be to stay in Parga town and you can either walk (if you're feeling energetic!) or get water taxis to Valtos Beach. There's a smaller resort at Lichnos Beach, but it's a bit of a hike into Parga - although the water taxis go to Lichnos from Parga too.

I haven't been to Parga for donkey's years though, but we used to go for a number of years and loved it - and on most of those holidays the friends who came with us all had small children and it was a lovely, family resort then.

We hated Corfu and found sidari busy and brits abroad even in May.

Pefkos in Rohdes is nice as is Kamari on Santorini.

cherrytrees123 Wed 13-Jun-18 12:31:48

Yes, Zante is a hell hole.

Crete is wonderful! Fly into Chania or Heraklion (both fab in their own rights), spend a couple of nights in Rethymo (also fab) then head south (a 1 hr drive) to Plakias, stay in one of the supremely cheap hotels or airbnbs around there and spend as long as you like discovering all the heavenly beaches. There is diving and snorkelling at Plakias, Shinaria and Calypso (look for Calypso diving centre), as well as boat trips to Preveli (or you can drive) and you can drive to Chora Sfakion and take a boat to Loutro.

In April the water is still quite cold though, even on hot days - obviously always better than here - but the later you go the warmer it will be.

astoundedgoat Wed 13-Jun-18 13:19:21

If you like wine there are loads of wineries just in from Heraklion, btw. Probably not completely thrilling for a small child but fun for you! They all do organised tours where you see the vineyards, the winery itself, cellars, and then have a tasting and lunch. Super cheap.
