I didn't know CBeebies endorsed LYING!

I was having a flick through Facebook earlier and found that a friend of mine had shared a post from CBeebies.

They are stating that the characters of Captain Pugwash were:
- Captain Pugwash
- Master Mate
- Barnabas
- Tom the Cabin Boy
And Cut Throat Jake.

They won't discuss it further.

LIES. IT'S ALL LIES! shock

That is correct as far as I recall.

<sticks fingers in ears>

I'm not listening!

Tidypidy Tue 29-May-18 16:45:54

I thought it was Master Bates and Seaman Something?

WindyWednesday Tue 29-May-18 16:47:06

I’m afraid it is correct, I’ve got the original books.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira Tue 29-May-18 16:47:14

Nah Tidy that’s an urban myth!

HarshingMyMellow Tue 29-May-18 16:48:05

But I remember it being Master Bates and Seamen Staines!
shock

SimonBridges Tue 29-May-18 16:49:17

Sorry but Master Bates, Seaman Stains and Roger the cabin boy were a 90s urban legend.

Nightfall1 Tue 29-May-18 16:49:26

and Roger the Cabin Boy!

notacooldad Tue 29-May-18 16:54:44

Rit was Tom the Cabin boy and Master mate.!
You know it's true! You are just in denial!!
grin

HarshingMyMellow Tue 29-May-18 16:57:04

Nope, NOT having it. I remember so vividly, my childhood mind can't of been filthy enough to make those up.

AsAProfessionalFekko Tue 29-May-18 16:58:13

Ah the innocent 1970s...

PatriciaHolm Tue 29-May-18 17:02:24

Sigh...

I’ll get my books and show you. I’m afraid it’s an urban legend. Not fact. CBeebies have got it correct.

HarshingMyMellow Tue 29-May-18 18:13:28

@WindyWednesday where on Earth did my mind get that from then.
Need to check myself in somewhere I think confused

WindyWednesday Tue 29-May-18 18:22:36

I think it’s one of those things that you hear and then they become fact.

SimonBridges Tue 29-May-18 18:50:19

When we were students in the early 90s many pub conversations were about half remembered children’s programs.
It was the early days of the internet and it wasn’t on VHS. Someone who always seemed like they knew everything would pass this off as fact and it circulated after that.

HarshingMyMellow Tue 29-May-18 21:13:24

I'm sure I remember it being rude. I stand corrected!

Sorry CBeebies.

Totally unsettled as to why I thought that was true though, I've never really spoken about it to anyone. Where my wires have gotten crossed? I'm clueless🤯

WindyWednesday Tue 29-May-18 21:22:22

It’s isnt rude, that I can see. This is Pugwash the Smuggler. By John Ryan. 1976

Urban myth started by students - John Ryan won damages when two newspapers published the claims without taking the obvious step of checking the original books - see John Ryan's Telegraph obituary:

MexicanBob Tue 29-May-18 21:30:12

Weren't the names made up by some journo as a "joke" except that John Ryan didn't find it funny and sued. I seem to recall a grovelling apology in the paper.

You got there before me Screaming
