So it would appear that runner beans are poisonous when raw

I didn’t know this. I hadn’t put two and two together with like bean beans and runner beans.

So the 185g pack I spent the morning nibbling on to stave off junk food has been a huge mistake.

Does anyone know how long bean poisoning lasts?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine Fri 25-May-18 18:21:45

They are? shock I've always eaten them raw with no I'll effects.

Passmethecrisps Fri 25-May-18 18:23:23

I am 100% sure I have previously as well. Probably just one or two though rather than a large packet.

I started to feel queasy and thought I would google it.

Right enough, the packet does tell you not to eat them raw

I am suffering!

PuffinsSitOnMuffins Fri 25-May-18 18:23:28

Don’t worry, I used to eat them raw in large quantities as a kid, they’re fine.

PestymcPestFace Fri 25-May-18 18:23:37

You got runner beans at this time of year? Surely they were french beans. The poison is in the mature dried seeds, young ones should be fine.

I always eat runner beans raw and I am still here.

MiddlingMum Fri 25-May-18 18:25:05

My parents used to grow several rows of them when I was a child. I would hide in amongst the rows and eat them by the dozen. No ill effects whatsoever, and I've eaten plenty in our own garden since. Not saying they're not poisonous, but it must be mild or only affect some people.

They're not runner beans, they're green beans (which are baby runner beans). They're definitely fine to eat raw.

Although proper big beans out of runner beans are nice too.

Soubriquet Fri 25-May-18 18:25:28

No way!!

I remember as a kid eating my nans rubber beans fresh off the plant.

She used to moan she had none left grin

She has about 10 plants so obviously she was exaggerating but I used to eat around 20 a time

PestymcPestFace Fri 25-May-18 18:25:37

The cooking warning is probably more to do with salmonella grin

How are you suffering? DH eats them all the time in the summer, straight off the plant.

TroubledLichen Fri 25-May-18 18:26:04

Did someone German tell you this? For some reason raw green beans are considered toxic in Germany but strangely not anywhere else...

user1471459936 Fri 25-May-18 18:26:23

Don't they contain cyanide?

Passmethecrisps Fri 25-May-18 18:27:10

Something related to cyanide apparently.

They were from Tesco and flown in from somewhere.

I think people have different levels of tolerance.

On the bright side I may lose a pound or two

DryHeave Fri 25-May-18 18:27:22

Have you been listening to No Such Thing As A Fish/Answer Me This? (Can’t remember which it was on recently.)

sirfredfredgeorge Fri 25-May-18 18:34:14

you'd need the bean to be very big and solid to get any concentration.

Passmethecrisps Fri 25-May-18 18:43:40

Well I have thrown up multiple
Times to the point where I now am chucking stomach acid. I started feeling sick and a bit dizzy at about 12 when I had eaten them all.

I told myself for ages it was coincidence

Passmethecrisps Fri 25-May-18 18:44:05

dryheave what an apt name!

You will need to enlighten me

ItsAllGoingToBeFine Fri 25-May-18 18:44:41

TBH is probably more likely to be e-coli.

Bubblysqueak Fri 25-May-18 18:45:37

Yes they are . my childminder accidently poisoned my dc with them and theybwere violently sick for the next 24 hours.
I had no idea as I have always eaten them raw blush

Passmethecrisps Fri 25-May-18 18:48:30

There are a few stories online of people getting sick after eating one. There was a class of school children apparently who all became ill.

I did wonder if it might be something on the beans rather than bean poisoning. It is definitely bean related.

I don’t feel sick enough for ecoli if that makes sense. I mean I feel awful and earlier on could hardly get one foot past eh other but I am not violently sick from both ends

SugarMiceInTheRain Fri 25-May-18 18:52:44

I used to eat them raw all the time! Hope the illness is short-lived OP!

bluerunningshoes Fri 25-May-18 18:52:48

all beans are poisonous when raw. some can make you dangerously ill, like raw kidney beans.
the stuff in pre-prepared salads is blanched (cooked for a short time in boiling water and flash cooled) to keep the bite.

Passmethecrisps Fri 25-May-18 19:23:57

I knew about kidney beans and the like but hadn’t put the two things together.

I feel much better now and just have the headache which I had before this whole thing started.

Awesome Friday night!

user1471459936 Fri 25-May-18 19:47:26

Oh no! Do you have someone with you to look after you?

gingergenius Fri 25-May-18 19:56:20

Raw runner beans have Prussia acid which I believe is poisonous in large quantities. You'd have to eat a lot.
