Letters.

Hearing a song once and wondering what it was and whether you’ll ever hear it again. Then hearing it years later when you are older.

I had two songs and lots of letters. One of the songs I’ve not found yet!

Crying with laughter in a photo booth. Precious photos that have now been replaced with a thousand a day selfies!

^^wirh your friends! You'd look a bit daft on your own in a photo booth crying with laughter!

Your Dad trying to be cool talking to your new boyfriend when he called to make a date. I swear my dad hovered in the hall just waiting to pick up when the phone rang!

Fancying someone from afar and having to find out about him/her through asking questions in real life (rather than facebook stalking)

Hanging around the phone box in the village waiting for your mate to call.

Juke boxes where you only had a choice of twenty or so albums to pick songs from... And there was always maybe one decent album on there, so that particular band or song would become forever associated with that pub in your mind.

Having to be places on time rather than endless rearranging plans by mobile and text.

Answering the phone without knowing who is calling

Saving money up to buy albums

Singles with B sides

Giggorata Thu 19-Apr-18 21:29:11

Gathering round someone's house to listen to the latest album by Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Yes or other’s of that ilk.

ScreenQueen Thu 19-Apr-18 21:29:50

Going to the library to find the answer to a slightly obscure question.

Mix tapes. Not knowing who was calling until you picked up the phone. Ability to make a fool of your self without the evidence online forever

Giggorata Thu 19-Apr-18 21:30:01

OTHERS. Bloody autocorrect.

Getting post. Finding a letter on the doormat from a penpal, postcards from friends on holiday, love letters, notes and letters from friends at other universities, meeting people on holiday and writing to them, writing to friends that you would see at school the next day because the phone was only used for emergencies.

Keeping letters under your pillow or in a box and reading them over and over again. Writing pads with the lined page so that your writing was straight.

Buying nice writing paper and nice pens. Experimenting with different handwriting and signatures. I still love stationery but would never have a reason to buy a writing pad now.

Hanging around a phone box st a prearranged time for the love of your life to call it.

Watching tv as a communal activity

Being genuinely excited about what song was going to be no 1 that week.

Saving your pocket money, walking into town on Saturday morning to buy the single of the song you adored (you could only afford one at a time, and never an album until you started work). Getting it home and leaving the arm back on the record player to play it again and again and again until you heard "turn that bloody thing off!" coming up the stairs - no headphones of course.

Spending hours in HMV on a Saturday afternoon flicking through Albums

BluthsFrozenBananas Thu 19-Apr-18 21:34:16

Going to Camden market and getting the kind of clothes you simply couldn’t get in the average home town high street or from your mum’s Grattan catalog.

Finding out the answer to something you had wondered for ages and ages!
And equally, the glory of knowing the answer to something that someone else had wondered for ages.

While info at our fingertips is wonderful, I do miss that contentment of finally getting an answer....

Knowing that everyone else was watching Top of the Pops and you would all discuss the acts at school the next day.

Dozer Thu 19-Apr-18 21:36:03

Doing all sorts of an evening out with almost no fear of photo evidence!

Justmuddlingalong Thu 19-Apr-18 21:36:11

Booking an 'accomodation allocated on arrival holiday' abroad. You paid your money and found out where you were staying when the transfer coach dropped you off. No real idea of where abouts in the country of choice you'd end up, no preplanning of what you'd do when you got there and absolutely no reviews.

Teateaandmoretea Thu 19-Apr-18 21:36:26

Privacy. Being able to do stuff without there being pictures of everything on social media/ other people's phones.

AC14MUZ Thu 19-Apr-18 21:37:43

Taping songs off the radio and trying to stop recording before the talking started. So many mixed tapes of mine were made like this!

Arranging to meet your friends in town and everyone actually turning up because we didn't have phones to cancel last minute.

ScreamingValenta Thu 19-Apr-18 21:37:49

Sitting in the hall using the only phone in the house have long conversations with your school friends, while doodling all over the phone book and Yellow Pages; all the while hoping your parents haven't noticed you hogging the phone to witter on about what happened in Maths that afternoon.
