Can we have a "self care" thread?(445 Posts)
I don't look after myself well enough - junk food, not enough exercise, not enough "beauty" stuff to make me feel my best and spending too much money willy nilly on crap like Costa and biscuits.
Would anyone like to join a thread for the next 6 weeks or so till half term?
I will be aiming to:
Eat better - less sugar/refined carbs and more fruit/veg/nuts etc
Exercise - do yoga or pilates 3 times a week, up the walking incl. more school runs if it ever stops raining
Beauty - teeth cleaning, mouthwash, flossing, taking make up off before bed, sorting my hooves ready for summer shoes.
Money - saving £x each week so we can do something special during the summer holidays.
Also need to book in my dentist check up which I missed around Christmas and still haven't rebooked!
I’d like to join OP
I was thinking this today, too much coffee/cake, not enjoying it and mindlessly continuing.
-I pledge to reduce coffee shops to weekends.
-Walk where possible.
- Evening skin care
Oohh I'm in. Great thread idea.
I am on day 5 of a 100 day pledge (marked on calendar and phone reminder) to do something small each day to look after myself better and feel better in time for our summer holiday.
I had decided that it could be something small like remember to take my iron tablets to help me feel less knackered or put cream on my feet at bedtime so my heels are less cracked and painful to walk on but I'm have surpassed myself so far which is amazing seeing as its school hols and the DC are all home.
I bought a water filter and am drinking 8 glasses a day, got the juicer out and made juice daily, cut out wheat and chocolate and have soaked, filed and creamed my feet daily. Been to the gym twice too!
This afternoon I even dyed my hair and put on a mud mask.
Pizza and salad tonight for dinner. I decided I would have a few pieces if I wanted it but after my salad, I didnt. More self care.
Need to get a thyroid blood test to check meds don't need upping tomorrow.
Let's see how long this lasts!
Interesting to hear about thyroid WW - I'm having mine checked again as my levels are raised but not at a level where it should be treated (but I'm soooo exhausted all the time hence not even always getting to teeth/make up before bed)
I was doing a daily tracker thing in a bullet journal which helped me keep on track, so may do that again to help motivate me.
I recommend O’Keefes foot cream.
Was a miracle for me.
Better than flexitol or the footner peel.
£8ish and dramatically different after a single use.
This might not be helpful, but I suffer from chronic illness and have fatigue issues and it helps me. I take my make up off/do serum/cream/etc long before bedtime. Just whenever I get 5 mins. Means that I just have to brush my teeth before bed and that doesn't seem like a massive task.
I had all the symptoms of hypo long before they treated on the blood test results Mrs, I'm afraid. I hoped the levothyroxine would magically get rid of my knackeredness but I've been on it for almost a year now and had no change. I have extremely low iron and prescribed iron pills I don't take which probably has something to do with that . Not bothering to keep up with them (been low iron for years due to being vege) could have caused the hypothroidism in the first place. <sigh>.
I also had very high inflammation levels on my last blood test so though going gluten free may help.
The tiredness levels have improved dramatically just from that!
Not sure I can keep it up though. Bread is all around me and the gluten free stuff just doesn't cut it!
Will track down that foot cream. My feet are a right state.
Yes, cleaning face when I get PJs on (if not showering in the eve) is the way forward Gobby
Argh, I've read about the possible link between gluten and thyroid. I think low(er) carb for me is step one. Yes gluten and lactose is all over and temptation is awful!
I weighed myself yesterday and due to giving up smoking and comfort eating, I've Now got at least 3 stone to loose.
Low carb as of Monday!
My nails are crap as is my hair.
Dry skin, shit eyebrows and all my clothes are shit.
I've properly lost myself 😳
@namastayinbed love love love your username!
I think I need this.
I’m on some fairly hostile medication, though I’ve escaped the worst side effects.
I’ve put on about 10lbs, and would like to lose at least half of that,
I’m tired all the damned time, but feel better if I exercise, so I need to make sure that I do something, even if it’s not very much, at least 5 days a week.
I’d like to use some of my nicer toiletries, rather than saving them up for a treat that never seems to arrive.
I need a new haircut, and probably do something about the colour too (home dyed - treat myself to proper highlights, perhaps)
I need to paint my toenails regularly, instead of once in a blue moon leaving it to scuff chip and half grow out before I get round to it again,
And i’f Like inspiration from everyone else’s lists!
I am 100% on this.
I work full time, and I have a toddler.
I'm up at half 5 every morning so I can do yoga and have breakfast. DS and DP are up at half 6. We all leave the house at quarter past 7. I get on the train to London at 7:50. Work is 9-5:30. Evening routine is then dinner, DS's routine, tidy, watch something for an hour. I'm so tired, I'm in bed by 9 every night. I feel like there's no time or energy for me to take care of myself! Weekends are full of boring stuff like housework and visiting elderly sick parents on both sides!
This week I've also been having a tummy ache. Yes, the whole week!
DP and I think we need to overhaul our diets and spend more time in the fresh air. ( I definitely need to cut out gluten and dairy). So that's the main goal for the moment, that and keeping up with my yoga!
One tip for exercising in the mornings - wear your workout clothes to bed! I'm more likely to head to the mat if I do that.
Should have said, we all get in at 7pm!
Margaret Dabbs hand cream (from Space NK) has transformed my hands and nails. I actually have finger nails that don’t flake and break!
Wayhey, I'm glad I started the thread. Loving the starting tomorrow and Monday
I am collecting a food shop in the morning, so guess I start tomorrow too. Have cleaned face and teeth.
Wish I could get up an hour before the small people! My DS is my alarm...
I desperately need an intervention before I implode.
But I'll think about the details tomorrow....
I have mental health issues, and self care is a big issue for me.
Today I've done a whole bunch of socialising, and I've eaten sort of healthy food. Also seen to personal hygiene and relaxed. Minus points: too much wine!
I’m in. So far I’ve been dieting, running, and using up lots of cosmetics and toiletries which means I’ve been moisturising, buffing, exfoliating and generally preening more than usual (actually only a few minutes a day!)
Start small, one thing at a time. My skin feels amazing now, and most of all I now look forward to my time- my run, my little moments of pampering, and my headspace. It’s amazing how little time I gave myself, and actually everyone benefits because I am so much happier.
My next thing, weirdly, is ironing. I’m going to set aside 30 minutes a week to iron clothes. I’m tired of feeling a bit ‘crumpled’ and think a few items, nicely ironed, each week will really help that.
Good idea. I want to move more, drink less wine, be more mindful. Will check in!
I'm in. I got a habit tracker from Amazon as bullet journaling just baffled me.
I'm trying to do a nice night time mini facial as in cleanse and moisturiser at least. I am rubbing hand and foot cream in once a day and now they're fairly well established I'm going to try and take 5 minutes to enjoy a cup of herbal tea in the day. I enjoy this stuff so much when I do it, feel instantly better for giving myself even just a minute to rub some band cream in and take a couple of deep breathes. Yet it seems so hard at the beginning to 'find the time'. I find plenty of time in the day to beat myself up though!
I'm enjoying reading what others are doing and maybe get some more ideas
I'll join you. I started a bit of a self-care regime two days ago.
10k steps a day - exceeded this both days so far
No added or processed sugar -
had eyebrows threaded
had an Epsom salt bath
done a face mask
done less well on cutting back on alcohol as a colleague bought champagne at lunchtime for a special occasion and then was round at a friend's tonight who opened some really nice wine. I tried to say no and then...
I like this.I have:
started a gym with all f the spa stuff (I have sore joints so it helps hugely)
bought some scales to lose weight
skincare and footsore (self tan/glycolic pads/night cream etc) all in one big nice basket in cupboard next to my bed so I pull it out and do it all in bed at night and... a lovely carafe and glass for water next to my bed. it has massively increased my fluid intake as I wake a bit in the night so just keep sipping some water when I wake up, plus last thing and first thing. skin much better.
