Ideas for 1980's fancy dress for the larger woman

Ok so I have l, in a fit of madness, agreed to go to a 1980's fancy dress party. I am a size 22 and 5ft 4 and the neon tee shirt and netty skirt combos they sell online as typical 1980's fare makes me look ridiculous (I recognise that looking ridiculous is a given in 1989's fancy dress but this is taking it too far). I need the hive mind to give me ideas of what I can put together. I am old enough to remember the 1980's but I'm at a loss as to options. Please, folks, chuck ideas at me...

Shell suit?

AlpacaPicnic Thu 22-Feb-18 15:20:14

I'm your height and size and I had a similar issue! I decided to go as Slash from Guns n roses... jeans, gnr tshirt, denim battle jacket (denim jacket from the charity shop with the arms cut off!) and a top hat. I have curly hair anyway but you could try a curly wig... cheapo pair of sunglasses and an inflatable guitar complete the look and if the venue is appropriate, take an empty Jack Daniels bottle - or a full one! Or fill an old one with pop to make it look full wink

Wonder Woman was 80’s wasn’t she? You’d look buxom and amazing.

BTW I never wore the neon stuff they peddle as '80s gear' and neither did anyone I know.

I was more Frankie Says or dungarees à la Come On Eileen (although on me it was probably more Come Off It Eileen grin).

I spent most of the 80s with a bad perm, dressed in an oversized black jumper, baggy leggings and neon jewellery, if that helps at all?

Greenglassteacup Thu 22-Feb-18 15:25:53

Alison Moyet.

AlpacaPicnic Thu 22-Feb-18 15:27:25

My Slash look! Plus... so many pockets in that outfit, so practical!

MrsHouseBrownie Thu 22-Feb-18 15:27:50

Rainbow bright? Grotbags? Madonna? Boy George? Someone off Dynasty (power suit)? These would be who I would go as! Boy George would be my fave!

AdaColeman Thu 22-Feb-18 15:31:45

Jump suits or dungarees were the fashion then, or what about a straight skirt and a top with padded shoulders?
Large earrings, curly hair, and plenty of kohl to complete the look!

AdaColeman Thu 22-Feb-18 15:34:34

Or make yourself a Frankie Goes to Hollywood Relax teeshirt and wear with jeans. Use fabric paints or appliqué.

doctorcuntybollocks Thu 22-Feb-18 15:39:40

Another vote for Alison Moyet.

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour Thu 22-Feb-18 15:42:39

Grit bags would be awesome!

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour Thu 22-Feb-18 15:42:55

Grot not grit! grin

Cadsuane Thu 22-Feb-18 15:57:26

I remember going to a radio 1 roadshow and almost all the girls (me included) were wearing longish black skirt, white teeshirt with a denim shirt over. This would have been around 1986 or 7.

Ooh that was quick. I'm loving Slash! Very impressive. Also Alison Moyet as I could probably do her from my current wardrobe! I am quite keen on the dungarees/large tee/hat on back of head Bananarama style but I have no ideas where to get dungarees from!

angularmerkel Thu 22-Feb-18 16:02:02

Far too many exclamation marks in that post! It must be eighties enthusiasm! grin

Birdbath99 Thu 22-Feb-18 16:06:10

Bella emberg did it with Russ Abbot

AdaColeman Thu 22-Feb-18 16:07:38

Amazon for dungarees.

I'd just wear something fairly neutral like black leggings and a black tunic, then use 80s accessories.

So, lacy fingerless gloves, a bit of lace tied in your hair or a beret, pixie boots, loads of plastic beads round your neck and dangly earrings. Even a hip belt.

Then really crap 80s makeup. Get thee to a Rimmel counter and buy Heather Shimmer lipstick. Blue mascara, white eyeliner, bright pink blusher drawn on in stripes and a beauty spot.

Boots sell Lace perfume. You could even smell like the 80s!

On another thread like this a while back when the OP was pregnant, someone suggested Meatloaf which I thought was genius.

MickHucknallspinkpancakes Thu 22-Feb-18 16:16:54

Boilersuits were popular, or get a beige one and go as a Ghostbuster?

ViceAdmiralAmilynHoldo Thu 22-Feb-18 16:28:24

Go as a New Romantic?

picklemepopcorn Thu 22-Feb-18 16:46:01

Big frizzy hair, brook shields eyebrows, purple lippy and blusher in stripes.

Batwing sleeves. T shirt saying Frankie Says.

I wore long narrow skirts.

picklemepopcorn Thu 22-Feb-18 16:49:04

Oh, and a belt around a slash neck jumper,
