Anyone know how to break into a safe?

I’ve just moved house and the previous owners have left an apparently unmoveable safe behind. It’s locked shut and has a twisty dial thing to open it. I’m 99.9% sure there is nothing interesting in there but it’s going to irritate me everytime I spot it. Can locksmith type people break into them? Or is there a default code that it might be? Would I look a bit bonkers if I ask the EA to contact previous owners to get them to give me the code. It wasn’t on the inventory so it shouldn’t really be here.

No real ideas, but have you tried obvious combinations - 9999 etc?

IveGotStupidHair Wed 21-Feb-18 21:14:55

I’ve just tried all the same numbers so 0000, 1111 etc with no luck. I’ve also only just noticed it’s got a great big keyhole in it as well. So even if I miraculously got the code right I’d still need a key.

Behind the circle next to the nob is a key hole that I didn’t notice. I would be the worst burglar in the world.

Can you contact the previous owner?

dantdmistedious Wed 21-Feb-18 21:18:05

That looks like a heavy duty safe! I'd contact the EA.

FabbyChix Wed 21-Feb-18 21:18:54

If it’s heavy they can cost around £250 to move

ScreamingValenta Wed 21-Feb-18 21:19:17

Hmm. If it wasn't on the inventory and it's not part of the house fixtures you'd be within your rights to ask the vendors to shift the thing. But then you'd potentially be losing out on a safe full of diamonds grin. I would try ringing a locksmith and see what they think.

Oh goody. another Mystery Locked Safe thread.

Idratherhaveacupoftea Wed 21-Feb-18 21:21:20

My neighbour had one like that, managed to somehow lock herself out of it and just called the local locksmith, they do it in minutes.

Love this type of thread! Keep us updated OP!

Only1scoop Wed 21-Feb-18 21:23:56

Ooo

Another safe one

Excited

PuntCuffin Wed 21-Feb-18 21:25:32

Looks like an antique to me. Don't suppose the previous owners ever got into it either.

Spurtle Wed 21-Feb-18 21:25:53

Not this again! shock grin

DailyMailDontStealMyThread Wed 21-Feb-18 21:26:42

I was quoted £190 to get into our safe at work and it’s no where near as heavy duty as that looks.

LascellesMoustache Wed 21-Feb-18 21:26:51

A locksmith will open it

gingergenius Wed 21-Feb-18 21:27:00

What happened to the last mystery safe thread???

Festies Wed 21-Feb-18 21:27:11

There was another thread like this - it was ace. Probably in classics now. Loads of suggestions there.
In the interim: I suggest writing down any number you do try so as not to waste time trying them again.

Meandmy4 Wed 21-Feb-18 21:29:03

I dont know why but i have a feeling this will thread is going to be hilarious grin

Sorry op no help have no real helpful idea ...but maybe a heavy duty magnet ?(dont know why a magnet ) ... a stethoscope(seen in films) ... fire axe (also infilms) failing these do you know any burglars ?..failing that in pretty sure if you wait a few years theres a few safe crackers to be released from the nick grin x
Good luck though xxx

You annoy disappear like the last OP with a safe thread.

I don't have any suggestions though.

VladmirsPoutine Wed 21-Feb-18 21:30:51

I'm just here for the big reveal.

Get a fucking drill and be done with!

ScreamingValenta Wed 21-Feb-18 21:31:03

You need Jonathan Creek, OP.

TuftedLadyGrotto Wed 21-Feb-18 21:31:07

*cannot, not annoy

snozzlemaid Wed 21-Feb-18 21:32:16

Oh no! Here we go again...

IveGotStupidHair Wed 21-Feb-18 21:32:45

Oh sorry, didn’t know there was a previous safe breaking thread. I don’t think mine will be very exciting I’m afraid. What did they find in it last time.

My only slight hesistation at calling the EA is that it may in fact be full of pirate treasure that the previous owners had completely forgotten about.

So far my break in attempts have been
-try a selection of random numbers
- look at it for a while
- tell dh about who repeated my first two attempts
- start a thread on MN

I don’t really want to pay a locksmith £250! Is it more likely to be more or less expensive to break into an old safe?
