Where are the potted hyacinths?

Every year at this time I buy potted hyacinths to blossom over the holidays. I love the way they fragrance the entire house in the grim, cold weather.

I cannot find any! Not a single supermarket anywhere near me has them. Plenty of cyclamen, but no hyacinths.

Why? Has there been some terrible hyacinth plague? Or are they just suddenly terribly unfashionable?

I’ve noticed the same thing actually. I like the ones you plant yourself but it’s all amaryllises and irises in the shops. Which are pretty, of course, but no scent fsad

I’m so glad you asked this because I’ve just remembered that this is what my mum asked for for Christmas! Watching with bated breath... fgrin

I’ve seen some in my local florist.

Sorry, posted to soon, also plenty at the garden centre when I went for the Christmas tree.

I saw loads in our local garden centre today.

Saw them in Waitrose, Dorchester this am!

Loads in my local garden centre yesterday, weren’t there last week though, maybe they have been delayed in being ready for putting out for some reason?

Potted and forced ready to flower at Christmas? Not bare bulbs in a potting kit. If so, then I shall trawl the local garden centres this week.

ApplesTheHare Fri 15-Dec-17 18:21:23

M&S have got them in smile

MiddlingMum Fri 15-Dec-17 18:22:26

Waitrose, garden centres, florists, flower stall at the local market. I've seen them in all these places in the last week or so.

Efferlunt Fri 15-Dec-17 18:22:39

Seen them in Waitrose

Not where I live.

How strange.

IKEA have some ready potted at the moment.

There were plenty a few months ago in UK. Perhaps they've just sold most of the stock?

Anymajordude Fri 15-Dec-17 18:33:12

Saw some in Aldi yesterday.

weasle Fri 15-Dec-17 21:17:45

IKEA had hundreds this week. 75p each pot I think!

GingerKitCat Fri 15-Dec-17 23:30:26

Seen them in Morrisons and Aldi (near the tills) this week smile

I went to the garden centre - they had barely any hyacinths! It was a choice between an overpriced, over-crowded fancy glass pot with 3 bulbs, or a large basket of 6 bulbs which had only small green spikes, so unlikely to flower before Christmas. And 6 in one place would be overwhelmingly fragrant - fine for, say, a very big room or grand hallway, but not suitable for a little entryway or kitchen.

I bought the smaller one.

Maybe I ought to try forcing them myself next year. But that takes organisation.

MiddlingMum Sun 17-Dec-17 17:29:30

They've even got them in our little local Co-op, all potted up prettily. I thought of you when I saw them today OP smile

In Poundland and the proper florists this week.

I bought a pot from Aldi. First one is starting to flower but it doesn't smell of anything hmm
