Dd wants an iPhone. Help.

Dd is in year 7. She's had our old iPhone since she started in September. All she wants for Christmas is a new iPhone with more data. Just been into the mobile phone shop and the cheapest!!!!! option is an iPhone 7 with 12gb of data - will cost 48 a month shockshock.

She currently has a very old cracked iPhone with 4g of data which she burns through - she has a long and boring bus journey and is obsessed with music, so uses Spotify a lot.

I could just about afford this but not sure if it's a) madness and b) if I could be cleverer about it.

She doesn't have an ipod or an ipad Fwiw

it's madness

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers Thu 07-Dec-17 12:03:57

That way madness lies.

Can you put her onto Vodafone? You could pay for the Entertainment Pass which allows her to use unlimited data for Spotify, so her 4GB is available for everything else.

That sounds good (the entertainment pass). This is the kind of thing I need to know!!

You can get an iPhone 7 on Carphone Warehouse with 12gb of data for £32 per month (£59.99 upfront) that was from a very very quick search so I'm sure you can get it cheaper elsewhere...

I'd say if she wants all that data then she has to have a 'less fancy' iPhone, not an 8 or whatever...

We’ve got DS an iPhone SE from sky mobile for £10 a month with 1GB. Think could buy more data quite cheap but DS is 11 and hasn’t had a phone before and will only really use it so he can ring us if he misses the bus when he goes to come etc.

Migraleve Thu 07-Dec-17 12:06:13

That's not the cheapest option.

Scabbersley Thu 07-Dec-17 12:06:19

She'd be happy with a 6 I think but I know they are 3 years old now

Petalbird Thu 07-Dec-17 12:06:22

And three has many sims with go binge (unlimited streaming of certain sites) then buy a much cheaper phone

Scabbersley Thu 07-Dec-17 12:06:55

She definitely doesn't want an 8!!!

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers Thu 07-Dec-17 12:07:03

£5/month for the music pass. Maybe have the cracks repaired?

Scabbersley Thu 07-Dec-17 12:07:28

Three told me that go binge was only available with a 12g plan

WeeBeasties Thu 07-Dec-17 12:08:01

Why does it have to be an iphone? Get an android with unlimited data.

Ginfiend Thu 07-Dec-17 12:08:04

You can still get a 6s for less than 30 per month. Incl lots of data.
It sounds like it’d be cheaper for you to pay monthly for Spotify premium (£9.99) and that way she can download the music over Wi-fi and play it back without using data. Is it something the whole family uses? Might be worth while?

cakeymccakington Thu 07-Dec-17 12:08:05

Try Giffgaff they do excellent data bundles

Scabbersley Thu 07-Dec-17 12:08:23

I want to get her a new one as it's all she wants for Xmas. If I get the cracks repaired I'll have to think of something else to get her and I can't be arsed grin

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers Thu 07-Dec-17 12:09:08

What about a refurbished second hand handset?

Scabbersley Thu 07-Dec-17 12:09:36

weebeasties I have an android phone, I'd never get an apple. But she's adamant, all three dds have apples (they are not spoilt no I pads etc)

yasmin05 Thu 07-Dec-17 12:11:34

There are other Iphone models like 6 plus or 6s plus cheaper than the 7.

cakesandphotos Thu 07-Dec-17 12:12:31

iPhone 7s are still ridiculously expensive. When I asked the man at EE he spun me some BS about it having much more advanced tech than older phones and a better camera. Apparently that justifies a 2 year old phone with less memory to cost £15 a month more than my 6s hmm

Either go for a refurb or get an iPhone 6 or 6s which are way cheaper

Wallywobbles Thu 07-Dec-17 12:13:16

I got DD1 à iPhone 5s for £200 in October. We have a cheap data plan though unlimited data sms and calls for €16/month and Spotify family.

NetballHoop Thu 07-Dec-17 12:13:28

We had the same with our DD. In the end we got her a secondhand iphone from CEX and then just got a sim only contract which was nice and cheap.

The phone was in really good condition. Effectively as good as new.

BabyOrSanta Thu 07-Dec-17 12:15:20

Have you tried mobiles dot co dot uk?

I'm on my second phone from there and it's been on the MSE website so legit. I think it's related to Carphone warehouse or something...

I got an iPhone 8 with 6gb for £31 per month, £110 upfront but you can get more data etc with an iPhone 7

AuntLydia Thu 07-Dec-17 12:15:37

She can download Spotify playlists for a start. Mine had a 5s last year and it's served her well.

wineusuallyhelps Thu 07-Dec-17 12:17:17

I had this last year with my son when he was in year 7.

I got an iPhone 5s handset for £200 from giffgaff (this was a year ago so maybe the 6 would be a similar price now?). This was both his main Xmas and birthday present.

We top it up £5 a month with their "goodybag". He only gets a small amount of data and has to ration himself.

I don't have the latest iPhone so I don't see why my DS should!
