Food pictures on Instagram and Facebook- what's that all about?

I just don't get it. A friend I follow posted a rather glorious looking bowl of porridge this morning, complete with tiny pumpkins framing the picture and a very pretty rose in water posed artistically behind the porridge. It looked like something out of a magazine, but at the end of the day, it's showing off, isn't it? #mybreakfastisbetterthanyours

Who has the time to do that? Who thinks that anybody cares? I'm lucky if I drink a warm cuppa in the mornings!

I had a piece of toast on kitchen towel because I can't be arsed with the washing up. I'm fair living the dream.

D886 Tue 17-Oct-17 10:36:59

Ah, and did you post a picture of your minimalist living? 😂

GeillisTheWitch Tue 17-Oct-17 10:39:28

Some people have way too much time on their hands. I could sort of understand if its a really fancy meal or cake or something like that you've made, but a bowl of bloody porridge?

witchofzog Tue 17-Oct-17 10:39:38

Ah I love food pictures though I know from conversation with friends that I am definitely in a minority

PinkHeart5914 Tue 17-Oct-17 10:40:06

I do sometimes take pictures of food if I’ve been baking or go somewhere very nice for dinner but NEVER post them on anything, I just like looking at food porn sometimes

RitaMills Tue 17-Oct-17 10:49:33

I love food pictures, I'm a proper foodie I enjoy cooking, baking, sourcing recipes, sharing cooking tips etc etc so this wouldn't bother me. I understand not everyone is so my twitter feed isn't full of pictures of my cakes, I obviously do it with like minded people. Of course it's boring to some, not everyone has the same interests but food is one of mine. cakebrew

I'm saving myself for later when we have beans on toast for dinner because one of the kids left the freezer door open last night and I've lost about seventy quid's worth of food. It's not getting replaced until they're suffering from the scurvy, little wretches.

Venusflytwat Tue 17-Oct-17 10:52:10

Depends what you use IG for, surely?
I use mine as a gratitude diary. So basically anything that makes me happy each day. Sometimes that's a glorious sunset, sometimes it's my dinner. I don't care whether anyone else likes it, it's more a discipline for me to appreciate the little things in life.

GrandmaSuckingEggs Tue 17-Oct-17 10:54:09

It's dumb. What I really hate is when people post pictures of empty plates with their knife and fork on them like this one.

It really turns my stomach for some reason. I don't want to see the remnants of your fucking dinner.

It reminds me of a child going "Look mummy, I'm a good boy and ate all my vegetables". Fine for a child but when 32 year old professional adults do it, it makes me want to punch.

IHaveBrilloHair Tue 17-Oct-17 10:55:37

Food is my thing, cooking it, eating it, talking about it etc so that's why I post it on FB/Insta, I've made new friends who share my interest and I like looking at the I photos too

brighttimes Tue 17-Oct-17 11:06:59

I have an Insta account I only use for food pictures. The way I see it is that people don’t have to follow me so I use it just for food. I don’t post them on Facebook as that’s more general and I know a lot of my friends aren’t interested. Which doesn’t bother me at all!

amusedbush Tue 17-Oct-17 11:18:19

I have a food/weight loss/fitness Insta to keep me accountable. 2000 people follow it so I'm clearly not the only saddo who likes to look at other people's meals grin

coddiwomple Tue 17-Oct-17 11:24:19

I like it, it gives me ideas.

People post about all sort of things, trees, seashells, a pet, skies, gym. I can't see what the problem is.

LivingInLaLaLand Tue 17-Oct-17 11:32:47

I hate this sort of unnecessary bitchiness, if you don't like the food photos, unfollow, simples🙄

Some people like to be arty, I appreciate any photos where effort has been made as just that, food or not, I really don't get why some people just get pissed off & bitchy at anything & nothing, just for the hell of it. Doesn't make you look good imho

BusterTheBulldog Tue 17-Oct-17 11:36:07

Love food pictures! You could always hide / unfollow?

BirthdayBeast Tue 17-Oct-17 11:40:23

Living, totally agree. No one is forcing anyone to look at food photos.

Some people take photos of food for memories because it’s a special occasion and the food looked and tasted amazing, or because the food was vile, or to inspire others to eat healthily or to boast. Who cares.

Also, to the pp who said that these people have too much time on their hands...surely having time on one’s hands is a good thing?!? I would prefer to have too much time than not enough.

For the record I don’t post food photos but I couldn’t care less about people who do. The unfollow button is your friend.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal Tue 17-Oct-17 12:10:16

The unfollow button is your friend

Exactly this.

I can’t understand why people moan about trivial shit like this when there’s an easy solution, but there you go. If you she was bringing her dinner plate round to your house and forcing you to look at it I might have more sympathy.

JonSnowsWhore Tue 17-Oct-17 12:21:04

Venus that’s how I use my instagram aswell. I’ll post photos of anything I want to. Food pics, I do a few weight watchers recipes & use the hash tags to find other weight watchers accounts & recipes, pics of my kids or as you said other things that I’ve enjoyed during the day. People can follow or not, I enjoy looking back on it all. I don’t post all of it to Facebook as I know not everyone on there really gives a shit

D886 Tue 17-Oct-17 13:02:23

“Unnecessary bitchiness”. That made me lol! I haven’t said a word to anyone irl. You were all privy to my pretty harmless immediate thoughts after seeing pumpkin porridge pic of the day.

All I said what that I don’t get why people post food pictures. Some people on here don’t either; some people are into it and have said why. That’s helped; educated me so thank-you very much.

Not bitchy. And I even said the individual was artistic.

JonSnowsWhore Tue 17-Oct-17 13:40:48

I was a bit paranoid that the pumpkin porridge was mine as I did something very similar recently 🙈 but the rose in the bowl made me realise it wasn’t grin

I realise I am a wanky instagrammer & most munsnetters nightmare but I’ve got fuck all else going on in my life so posting semi artistic photos of my kids & food I make makes me happy grin

LookImAHooman Tue 17-Oct-17 14:11:23

Venus that’s a brilliant idea

hellokittymania Tue 17-Oct-17 14:32:09

It's the food porn thing. It's been going on forever now. In Hong Kong, people are always doing it. I take pictures when I cook something if it's really good or if it's the first time I'm trying it, but after that I usually don't.

Venusflytwat Tue 17-Oct-17 16:41:36

Thanks smile

LivingInLaLaLand Tue 17-Oct-17 18:30:14

Sorry D88, but whether you intended it or not, some of your presumptions as to why people post these sorts of photos are IMHO are pretty bitchy, same goes for several of the replies too.

Venus I love that idea too 😊👍🏼
