I think they just like to chew! Ours does this even though she's got loads of different chew toys, she prefers the bars of the cage.

I was told as a child that it's because their bottom teeth keep growing so they need to gnaw on things to keep them to a reasonable length

Their teeth grow continuously, they need to wear them down. Also boredom. Give it a wheel, chew toys, let it out as much as possible. It must be very bored. Imagine being shut in the one room all day. Not having a go, I used to keep them when younger, but if it's a boring cage, consider getting a multilevel one.
