Primary school project: 'a modern person associated with peace' help!

DS (8) has to research and present on a 'modern person associated with peace.' The only person I can think of off the top of my head is Malala but if imagine quite a few children will choose her. He has zero idea.

Any suggestions?! Someone approaching peace from a science/technology angle would probably pique his interest most. I'm stumped.

Ghanaian
Mandela
John Lennon

I'm googling these so I don't know if they are modern enough.

Don't you just love it when teachers come up with a bright idea for homework, give no guidance and leave the parents to come up with ideas?! Whose flaming homework is this?!

Bill Gates - some extraordinary work done by the Gates foundation to improve health & welfare in developing countries because poverty causes conflict

So what if they all choose Malala? I think she's a brilliant example and more likely to pique his interest than middle aged men.

ilovesushi Sun 24-Sep-17 14:25:09

Malala is a great choice and very current re her comments on the situation in Myanmar. Go with that.

Aung San Suu Kyi - Myanmar

Brilliant thanks, lots of good suggestions. I will check out the Nobel lists with him and see if anyone catches his eye.

Aung San Suu Kyi - Myanmar

Ha! Not currently!

Nelson Mandela

Ghandi

By modern I'm assuming the mean the Modern Era, so these should be fine.
And I think it's fine to do Malala, even if she is popular.

DioneTheDiabolist Sun 24-Sep-17 14:28:07

What about Kailash Satyarthi. He is a children's rights campaigner who was the joint Nobel prize winner with Malala.

LaughingStock, really? I think there are a group of indigenous people who would disagree. As would Desmund Tutu

blossomdeary grin I know, it's quite tricky. He had to do one a while ago on a scientist he found inspiring and was all over it. 'Person associated with peace' is quite vague and I can't say he's champing at the bit...

Mo Mowlam for her work in NI regarding the Good Friday agreement

Leymah Gbowee. She's amazing. Not a science background but she started off her working life as a social worker working with young men who had been child soldiers, which would interest my sons.

MrsHathaway ha yourself

The brief doesn’t say the person must be uncriticised. She is indeed a modern person associated with peace. The point of the assignment surely is to introduce research methods.

Fernanie Sun 24-Sep-17 14:36:52

How well-known do they have to be? You could look at the speakers of past Build Peace conferences, which focuses on building peace through innovation. Lots of ideas for people who've done something simple but effective e.g. Johan Galtung's Peace Journalism or John Hunter's Peace Games. Also Mohamed ElBaradei who won the Nobel peace prize in 2005 for his campaigns for nuclear energy to be used for peaceful rather than military purposes.

Malala, Mo Mowlem, Tony Blair, Angela Merkel, Mandela,
