I'm not Christian but Abide With Me is probably my favourite. Lyrically it's not entirely relevant for me but the melody is simple and sublime. King's College Choir do it so well, along with Once In Royal David's City.

I also like Morning Has Broken and Michael (Row The Boat Ashore). I want Morning Has Broken at my funeral; hopefully a few decades away yet smile.

Abide with me really feels apt at a funeral.

Generally my favourite is Jerusalem, and all the Christmas Carols!

Oooooh loads. It changes all the time, but I do love As I Kneel Before You.

I've recently taken to Jesus, Name Above All Names.

I also like the David Haas You are Mine, Hosea (Come Back to Me) and Be Still.

No idea what any of it means but it sounded great to my primary school ears in the 70s. Ditto the one about When a knight won his spurs.
Though I've never believed the dragons are dead wink

Be thou my vision! And How Great Thou art smile

Draylon Thu 21-Sep-17 23:00:55

Thine be the Glory.

Trouble is, I'm atheist! grin

BeatriceBeaudelaire Thu 21-Sep-17 23:01:14

Lord of the dance ( is that a hymn?)

BroomstickOfLove Thu 21-Sep-17 23:02:41

Be Thou My Vision and Now the Green Blade Riseth.

Giraffeski Thu 21-Sep-17 23:04:25

How Great Thou Art here too.
Also love 'O Holy Night' at Christmas.

Giraffeski Thu 21-Sep-17 23:05:15

Oh yes @balfe As I Kneel is a good one

IvorHughJarrs Thu 21-Sep-17 23:05:45

Make me a channel of your peace.

Waytoogo Thu 21-Sep-17 23:06:02

Guide me o thou great Redeemer. I like the rousing ones!

TheSecondOfHerName Thu 21-Sep-17 23:07:36

In Christ Alone (Keith Getty)
I do realise this makes me very in original, as it usually comes somewhere in the top 5 in those Nation's Favourite Hymns polls

Also like How Can It Be (that I should gain...)

BulletFox Thu 21-Sep-17 23:08:53

Little drummer boy

TheSecondOfHerName Thu 21-Sep-17 23:10:06

I mean 'And can it be', not 'How'

jo10000 Thu 21-Sep-17 23:10:27

How great thou art, so powerful esp with the music but here are the words...

Oh Lord my God
When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds
Thy hands have made
I see the stars
I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout
The universe displayed
Then sings my soul
My Savior, God, to Thee
How great thou art
How great thou art
Then sings my soul
My Savior, God, to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art

DeadButDelicious Thu 21-Sep-17 23:10:48

Staunch atheist, but I do like Shine Jesus Shine. And Zadoc The Priest.

Clickncollect Thu 21-Sep-17 23:11:19

How Great Thou Art
Make me a channel of your peace
Servant King
Living Lord
Lovely hymns that make me quite emotional when I hear them.

ParkheadParadise Thu 21-Sep-17 23:12:08

I Watch the Sunrise

On Eagle's Wings

Walk with me, oh my Lord.

MountainDweller Thu 21-Sep-17 23:14:02

Yes to The Day thou gavest for a funeral. I also like Praise my soul the king of heaven, dear Lord and Father of mankind, and a lesser known one - My song is love unknown.

Seasonal ones - This joyful Eastertide and o little Town of Bethlehem

KichenDancefloor Thu 21-Sep-17 23:14:10

Be thou my vision - sung at my wedding, DCs christenings and, coincidentally every I'm time at church and life is falling apart elsewhere. It always seems to set me back on my feet.
The Rend Collective version is great if you like the Mumford and sons upbeat-folky-vibe

TheSecondOfHerName Thu 21-Sep-17 23:16:34

Can we also vote for least favourite?
Because DeadButDelicious has reminded me how much I hate Shine Jesus Shine. I had to sing it at the Royal Albert Hall last year for the Songs of Praise Big Sing, and then they chose it again for this year's Big Sing so I had to do it again!
