I always give a music box like this. Not necessarily a Sophie Le Giraffe one, there are other characters.

A hard back copy of your favourite children's book with a personal message written inside.

My eldest received some Lego children's cutlery. He loves them & so do I. Can snap together for travelling, easy to hold, wash in the dishwasher and made him feel special having 'his own' cutlery. I know it's not a lifetime present but it's the standout gift from a Christening attended by over 100 people.

Classic book like The Tiger Who Came To Tea, Very Hungry Caterpillar or The Gruffalo, with a plush character. Book People are good for that kind of thing.
