Lurker here,
I've re-registered purely to post this.

Google has drawn a blank thought they knew everything & Mumsnetters really do know everything !

I'm in rented accomodation,

Dinosaur of a cooker..

Every time I try & oven cook something I get black smoke, fire alarms & near burn the joint down.

Pic attached,
Can anyone shed any light on what the functions are on these dials ?

Thought the 2 lines was the oven but an element lights up & surely that's the grill?

Help!!!!!!! Please.

Desperately needing to cook supper drama free.

Thanks in advance!

On my ancient and shite cooker, the two lines are the oven and the element does light up. It doesn't cook evenly so you have to rotate things and make sure they're not too close to the top!

I'm not sure what the difference between the two functions with one line is though, mine doesn't have that.

I would think two lines oven, three little triangles grill on full and the w shape grill on half power. Is there something left inside the oven thats burning, does it need a good clean out? If there's spilt oil on the bottom that might burn.

One has a dot as top which you would think means grill & one has dot at bottom which you would think oven but thought the bit with two lines was the oven.
Each mode = potential house blaze

Thanks !!
I've scrubbed & scrubbed but there's nothing obvious !

One possibility is the element which heats the oven is very dirty and so is burning off fat etc from previous users. Ours does that even though it is only us who have made it dirty

I guess the three triangles is the grill - which might heat the same space or might be separate? Might be the same dirty element or might not AS for the tw zig-zag thing -- does it have a built in microwave? No clue otehr wise what that might be, but if its a microwave you might be better off using that function. If no turntable though, I guess it isn't.

If the smoke smells of burnt food, then a clean might sort it, but if it is in any way electric contact the landlord and don't use it! Also be v careful cleaning as if you rub anything, that might break it, and l'lord might charge you sad

Ah, cross post. Think you better report it to the landlord?

greenclouds Wed 20-Sep-17 16:41:13

I think it's combination as there's an element but the hobs are gas!

The left hand dial is the temperature.

The right hand dial is: light bulb - just the light, top and bottom lines - the oven, zigzags on the top - grill. I'm not sure what the difference between the two zigzaggy ones is.

The symptoms you describe, from my experience of an oven in a rental, suggest that the oven is filthy, particularly the heating elements, and all manner of burnt-on grease and crud is burning off and releasing smoke and fumes. Again, IME, chemical warfare and elbow grease on your part, or paying a specialist (about £60) is the answer. (You could try fighting with the landlord, but, IME, life is just too short.)

Light only

Top element and bottom element used to heat oven

Bottom element only (might be useful if cooking a large cake that would burn on top before it cooked through)

Would be my guess

Maybe time to accept I'm just not ever going to be Delia!

Perfectly good gas cooker sitting in the garage, how annoying, that beast of a thing is built in though!

PickAChew Wed 20-Sep-17 16:49:36

The two top element ones are probably full grill and half grill.

The one on the left controls temp while the one on the right is choice between oven and grill (I'm sure you've already figured that out). If you are burning stuff you must be using the grill setting rather than the oven setting? Or it's just broken.
