Mind. Blown.

As if he was actually called Farokh!

KindergartenKop Tue 19-Sep-17 20:11:22

I thought he was Persian?

Giraffeski Tue 19-Sep-17 20:11:57

Parents Gujarati, lived in Tanzania

SumThucker Tue 19-Sep-17 20:12:01

I knew, I was only telling DP last week, he didn't believe me.

Giraffeski Tue 19-Sep-17 20:12:30

I know no more without googling as DH has now changed the channel declaring the documentary to be boring.

I can't believe it passed me by for so long!

Think he was also of unusual religion - Zoroastrian I think??

lizzieoak Tue 19-Sep-17 20:17:23

Kindergarten, I think they were Zoroastrians, in India but of Persian descent (I could google but am seized by lazyitis).

TaliZorahVasNormandy Tue 19-Sep-17 20:21:18

I knew. He had a beautiful face.

EastMidsGPs Tue 19-Sep-17 20:22:44

Another odd fact, his mum spent her last years in a quiet suburb Nottingham and died there within the recent past.Members of Queen apparently visited. I worked there and never knew.
But it begs the question why NG3?

ThisIsntMyUsualName Tue 19-Sep-17 20:25:53

I was very surprised when on holiday in Zanzibar when we stumbled into a Freddie Mercury themed bar. Never knew he was from Zanzibar.

Alisvolatpropiis Tue 19-Sep-17 20:26:45

My dad was a big fan so I knew but I can see how people don't.

BreakWindandFire Tue 19-Sep-17 20:29:42

Which is why I cannot understand why Queen played Sun City during apartheid!

Fernanie Tue 19-Sep-17 20:38:44

This is a funny thing to be caps-lock-level astonished about. Are you reacting to him being non-British or Gujarati in particular? Spoiler alert: Norah Jones and Ben Kingsley are Indian too wink

LilQueenie Tue 19-Sep-17 20:40:40

I thought it was common knowledge.

BackieJerkhart Tue 19-Sep-17 20:41:00

shock no documentary involving Freddie mercury could ever be boring!!

holdthewine Tue 19-Sep-17 20:42:03

And Alistair McGowan...

orlantina Tue 19-Sep-17 21:05:39

I knew - but I have watched too many documentaries on Queen. He was born in Zanzibar.

BeatriceBeaudelaire Tue 19-Sep-17 21:08:38

His name was farokh and he played for rock ?

fakenamefornow Tue 19-Sep-17 21:13:48

Ben Kingsley is Indian!!??

I knew about FM, he looked Asian anyway and I knew he was born in Zanzibar. I knew Norah Jones was from somewhere, I thought Iran if I had a guess. But Ben Kingsley, I thought he was posh English.

SuffolkNWhat Tue 19-Sep-17 21:15:59

Ben Kingsley's birth name is Krishna Pandit Bhanji.

PerspicaciaTick Tue 19-Sep-17 21:16:26

Freddie went to the same school as one of my relatives near Mumbai - several decades later though.
I think that might be the closest thing I have to a claim to fame.

llangennith Tue 19-Sep-17 21:22:22

I remember finding out from a documentary celebrating his life not long after he died, and being surprised but then realising 'yes of course he is!'

wowfudge Tue 19-Sep-17 21:24:33

Ben Kingsley is from Salford - he went out with one of my mum's friends when they were teenagers. That was before he changed his name.
