My fish had a baby!

We bought two fish about a month ago and another two last week. All been fine and the kids are thrilled.
Thought I saw a tiny one lurking in the stones at dinner time and an hour later DH saw it too. It is under the filter, swimming about trying to get out.

We went to the pet shop for advice and they said it will find a way out and then just see if it survives. I really want it to survive! We have discussed helping it out the filter but then there is the chance that another fish will eat it so now we are back to hoping it will get out on its own.

Has anyone else had this issue? It certainly explains why one of them appeared to have the shits when it first arrived!

You can get floating or clip on breeding nets to isolate the baby in the same tank until it's bigger. Normally livebearer fish have more than one baby at a time, but they're happy to eat their offspring!

My fish have had babies a couple of times. And eaten them.

Awwwwwwwwwwwww. Itty bitty baby fishies. Congratulations mummy fish.
Can we have a picture, please.
For those who don't know a baby fish is called a fry.
And a pregnant fish is called a twit.grin

Oh god!! The kids ( 4 & 2) already know the baby exists, I don't want to have to explain that it got eaten by its own fucking parents!
I will look into the breeding net thank you.

I am pretty sure the one I saw was silver and this one is gold so it is possible there were more than one.

We bought a couple of fish a few years ago and the mummy fish kept having babies we ended up with a whole shoal of the bloody things and a massive tank, we had to get rid in the end they were too much hassle.

monkeyfacegrace Fri 11-Aug-17 21:50:04

You have mollies/platys/guppies havent you grin

Youcanttaketheskyfromme Fri 11-Aug-17 21:51:10

Sniff it's head ?!?

HappyintheHills Fri 11-Aug-17 21:55:13

Sorry to say. Our platys kept interbreeding, twasnt a pretty sight.

luckylucky24 Fri 11-Aug-17 22:03:10

Oh bugger. Ours are platys but are supposedly both girls. Others are a different breed and hopefully also girls. The pet shop said they are pregnant for months so would have been before the even reached the store.

B1rdonawire Fri 11-Aug-17 22:05:56

Awww. We have insanely fertile platys. Fortunately so far the three original adults have permitted one fish-let to thrive into an almost grown-up (still going strong) and I've spotted two, possibly three, teeny new ones hiding at the back. If they make it, I am working on persuading a friend to take them and an old smaller tank we have. They're not terribly fast growers so I've got time to strong-arm my mate grin

Josiah Fri 11-Aug-17 22:10:07

You'll have to buy dolls house stuff for a crib and a pram!

CrazyCatLady13 Fri 11-Aug-17 22:12:34

If they have a dark spot on their side, towards the back, they're pregnant!

And if the baby is a boy he will happily mate with his mum!

You really need at least 3 females for every male as the boys are sex pests and will harass the girls non stop.
