Modern songs with poetry style lyrics

Project with my teens, but I am ancient! We are doing the whole Are Song Lyrics Poetry thing...

I've got the Dylans, and the pre 90s stuff. Can some young whippersnapper mumsnetters help me out with some lyrics which could be considered poetry from more modern days?

(to explain- last music I bought was Oasis, Definitely Maybe)

Am scouring old threads and my own MP3, but most quoted tend to be Dylan, Cohen etc etc and I don't want the kids getting too roll-y-eyed at me and my out of touchness!

Listen to Sampha - plastic 100C. Beautiful lyrics, and very modern

look at charty stuff where they write their own lyrics, Ed Sheeran, Taylor swift... or for bands, Lukas Graham, maybe 21 pilots?

Not saying they make good poetry right enough, but there's definitely enough there to discuss it and they should know them.

I would try some good rap. For example eminem's Stan.

Radiohead?

There's a very funny scene in a Jonathan Coe novel where a trendy teacher who tells his class that Blur and Oasis write "poetry" has a boy in the class who stands up and does a gangsta rap poem, complete with "gonna git you muthafucka an' put a cap in that muthafucka's ass" type lyrics.

How about Kate Tempest?

Liam Payne's new song.

Only kidding! 😂😂😂

Um - they are way too old but you could do some excellent analysis of anything by Dire Straits.

Christina Perri: Jar of Hearts

Kings of Convenience: I Don't Know What I Can Save You From

James Blunt: No Bravery

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross Fri 19-May-17 17:57:43

The James Blunt one is based on his time as a soldier, so could be developed into a discussion of modern war poetry...

Gumdroptears Fri 19-May-17 18:08:42

Ed Sheeran for sure

The Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner has a great turn of phrase. Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured is a great example, as is Cornerstone. About ten years ago The Guardian did this series of little booklets on great modern poets and they featured him- he was this little scrappy kid from Sheffield just firing out these amazing lyrics.

He also did some spoken word stuff- A Choice of Three is about a chance meeting on a train.
