Which is the best European Christmas market?

Yes I know it's still September, and I can't believe I'm posting in the Christmas topic already...but I'd like to plan a trip to a Christmas market in Europe for our anniversary so need to start looking into location, hotels, flights, babysitters (thanks Mum and Dad!) etc.

Which markets have you been to, and which is meant to be the best?

I've been to Edinburgh Christmas Market, and it's just wonderful, esp the atmosphere. Definately worth a visit, you won't be disappointed.

We've never been to Edinburgh so that could be an option!

Not a fan of flying to be honest (actually, not a fan of airports would be more appropriate) so was wondering about getting the Eurostar somewhere - has anyone been to Brussels at Christmas?

DH and I went to Cologne for a long weekend with his work social club, an organised coach trip, a few years ago. We went on Eurostar, on the coach and stopped at a chocolate factory through Belgium (good bargains). We stayed in a hotel in the centre of Cologne and were able to walk to all the six markets. On the return journey, we stopped for a couple of hours in Bruges, and also a hypermarket for booze.

There are usually loads of companies advertising trips in newspapers, the advantage being an all in one price for travel and accommodation.

I must say, we really enjoyed it, even though it was really cold at the beginning of December!

Berlin is great. Loads of markets, plus interesting other historical stuff (I lured DH in with promises of seeing the Wall, WW2 sights etc) and good general shopping. Plus there are good hotel and flight deals available. It's cold in December but wrapping up warm is all part of the fun!

I know you said you don't like airports, but posting anyway for anyone else who's looking.
