Dolls House for a boy?

I'd like to get my almost-4 yr old son a dolls house (as he is nuts about 'little toys' and miniature things) but all the ones I've seen are either astronomically expensive, intricate collector's -style ones or really over the top pink girly ones. Does an alternative exist?

He played and played with it at a friends house, he loves it!! Plus I don't think it is at all girlie.

I got my dc (boy & girl) a plain one from John Lewis which was about £100. I think it was the Marlborough house by Plan Toys. I think Toys R Us do a cheaper plain one with furniture too.

There are quiet a few wooden ones at around £50, we had one at that price with all the furniture included.

Boys always used to come round and play with our dolls' house when we were little.

These ones on ebay are cheap, some are new, some look nice.

we bought the 'toys r us' wooden one for dd last year and ds 3.5 has played with it more than dd

we call it a playhouse for our ds! spiderman and baddies like playing in there too. we have the toys r us one and i would say that its a tricky one as its play is a bit one dimensional...it has to be against a wall or falls over and two children playing with it can be a bit crowded with the swinging doors

try to get one that can be played on more sides we have this one too we didn't pay that price for it. but its a good size and can be accesed from various angles...an important point in cooperative play!

One of the charity shops (Oxfam I think, but not certain)sells a range of lovely wooden dolls houses that start at about £20. They're not second hand ones, I think they're sort of a Fair trade type initiative.

I think it's BNIB who does those charity dolls houses, that's what we have.

My dds adapt it to be an animal hospital, a dogs' home, etc.

If you got the modern playmobil house, you could supplement with more playmobil in future? DD has the Victorian Mansion and it is often has helicopters landing on the roof, binmen in the bath, pirates tucked up in bed courtesy of her brothers.

Or what about a castle?
