Lego v Playmobil

Know this post should perhaps go on Products but seeing as its for a christmas present I thought I'd post here! DS is 3.5 - he is just started to get into things you build yourself - he has some chunky lego but think he is ready for the next size up IYKWIM.

Would I be better off with a lego kit such as the Duplo Construction site - or Playmobil? Am a tad confused by all the choice thats out there and what the main differences are between them! Is Duplo lego aimed at younger kids than traditional lego??? Would Playmobil be too old for a 3.5 year old? Is Duplo too young?

Questions, questions - so answers please!

Playmobil definitely not too old for 3.5 yr old, DD loved it from age about 2, basically good once they are old enough not to swallow it. She still plays with it loads now (age 6.5). I reckon also a better bet than lego as he's probably a bit young for regular lego, but would grow out of duplo relatively soon.

Playmobil. It's great and will last. My DS aged 8 still likes it.

Agree with takver. Duplo has a limited life really - they're on to normal lego by about 5. My ds loved playmobil.

If he's into dinosaurs, something from the Playmovil dinosaur range might be a good place to start - nice chunky figures and not too many little fiddly bits. Some of the Playmobil comes with loads of little bits and pieces that a 3-4 yr old might lose track of easily. You can get nice little boxes to try as well - DS has a fisherman in a boat or you can get a very cute guinea pig set!

Actually, flicking through the catalogue just now, the Playmobil farm looks great.
