Oh what a shame. Can you do something before you go to work - open one present, put carrots out for the reindeer, that type of thing?

The job I'm working on culminates over Christmas week. I've told them from the start I'm not working. I'm not sure it's sunk in.

I did that last year ggirl. Was ill aswell but thought no-one would believe me so worked, felt terrible, went home cooked for whole family, ds1 threw up in his dinner and me and both boys ended up in bed with raging temps.

This year I've got annual leave but have to work new years eve and new years day night instead.

My boys were fine actually, they had a few stocking pressies when they woke then they waited until I got home and opened the rest. The nightmare for me was no sleep. Never again. Next year will be alcohol free and work christmas night instead.

It's awful isn't it? When I gave up work to be a SAHM I was a retail manager which basically meant that I was ultimately responsible for having someone work over Christmas. And if someone didn't I did. For nearly 10 years I worked Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, all of New Year.
AM glad to be out of it but always spare a thought for those working. Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, it is an evil time to work.

Yes Fio, they are. I always want to shout "if you are so pissed off to be out shopping, go home and make my day easier!"

I'm working the Monday and Tuesday before Christmas and the same between Christmas and New Year. I don't mind too much as I get both Fridays off.
I work in a Coffee Shop and it's closed then anyway.

Ouch SOH. dp had to work some shifts over Christmas for a lot of the time we've been together though thankfully got out of it last year and isn't working in his normal job at all at present. It's not just the shifts I hated, it was not being able to go away over Christmas and spend it with my family 200 miles away.

Yes, dp is a residential care worker with adults with learning difficulties in a home, but like ggirl's employer no one's expected to do all the Christmas and NY shift.

Do those who have to work Christmas or NY get anything extra for it or just normal pay?

DH is working Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. Luckily he was able to get out of Christmas Day.

Christmas Day is triple time. So even for a newbie beat copper about £300 for the day. Otherwise time and a half for bank holidays.
