Presents for 4 year old boy?

Can anyone suggest ideas for a present for a 4 year old boy please? Budget around £40.

Similar to my 9 head old DD, our 4 year old DD will be getting:
Skate board
Skateboard ramp
Helmet
Kinetic sand
A skating themed lego set
A remote controlled lake boat

As the mother of a 4 year old I'd be inclined to say spend £5 on a book and give any other budget in notes in a card for parents to save. They grow out of toys so quickly, expensive toys can be a real waste and it breaks my heart.

Better to have a growing stash for when they're older / to buy something they love at a different point in the year

I understand what you are saying Ninjawannabee but it is actually my grandson that I am buying for so I want to give him a nice gift. I used to give a big bag of smaller gifts for previous birthdays and Christmases but wanted to give one large gift this year which he would hopefully enjoy using.

What does he like? My 4yo is getting very into Lego and would enjoy the fire engine, airport or police sets. He’s less interested in playmobil at the moment.

Sorry if this sounds stupid but do you mean the smaller traditional Lego bricks or the larger Duplo ones?

My 4yo likes both DUPLO and Lego but for lasting value I'd go lego. She does have good fine motor skills for age though and has only recently (since 3.5 maybe) been able to manage the little bricks.

The sets have age ratings on them - at 4 he would need help to follow the instructions for any set though

DS is 5 at the end of November, he likes the little lego for following instructions and building but we get the most play value out of duplo because its more robust for actual games.

Pantomime ticket and an ice-cream in the interval. Making memories together beats plastic explosion, with the added benefit of your outing giving the parents some time to wrap presents whilst little one is out of the house. Whichever panto you go to see, gift a copy of the book or a toy of one of the characters to unwrap on Christmas Day. It could be the start of a Christmas tradition that little one looks forward to each year.

Dress up outfits

I think days out always go down a treat. You could get him a few things to open and then make a 'ticket' for a grandma and grandson day out.

Treasure X pirate ship, it’s one of the most played with toys in our house.

Role play item like kitchen/workbench/shop till and trolley set (if parents have room and agree)

Easel and art stuff (again clear with parents!)

Annual pass for local attraction

Trike or bike or ride on car if they have a garden

Construction type set for building things like Knex/Meccano/there are some generic wooden type ones.

Brio or equivalent

Lego City - these are the simpler of the "small lego" sets, it's a good age to start moving on from Duplo.

Playmobil set in a theme he likes - my 3yo loves the rubbish truck.

Dressing up sets

Good quality toy keyboard, maybe with a little audio recorder kit (whatever the modern version of a tape recorder is).

My 4 year old DS would like:

A playmobil set, something like the rocket, fire engine or carry along doll's house.

Ticket to see a show or to the cinema with a corresponding book or cuddly toy.

A baking set with some ingredients and utensils easy for them to use but not too babyish so there's growing opportunity.

Schleich or Papo animals or dinosaurs

Football goal and ball for the garden

This thread inspired me to pull my socks up and get organised. Just ordered the following from Smyths which I'll collect tomorrow. Earlier in the year, John Lewis were selling off remote controlled boats for £18 so he has that too and I still need to buy him a helmet.

Might be a good idea to ask the parents for ideas he would like so that you don't get duplicates, they could at least give you ideas of what topics he is interested or not interested in.

Lego is a pretty sage bet for that age, the normal lego bricks not duplo. Playmobil too is always good.

Proper Lego at four. That's when DS got his first proper sets like Star Wars, Lego Creator and Technic (played with Duplo and my old Lego before that).
