My 8yo DS has produced a list basically asking for consoles, pc, tv etc but nothing else.

He has a Switch already that we limit and an iPad.

I want to get him stuff he'll appreciate that's not tech but I've no clue.

What are you getting your 8yo?

My DS is similar. But he also likes comics. So the Beano annual. A comic drawing drawing book. Minecraft and roblox toys. Lego. He will play with these quietly if I insist on no screens

Why do you want to get him stuff he doesn’t want?

What aout Lego Hiddenside? Build the lego then bring it to life via the hiddenside app. Ds 9 got some for his birthday, it made ghm fall in love with again.

Have a look at the Turing Tumble:

If he’s obsessed with tech, maybe he would be interested in learning how it all works.

Well what are his interests other than his Switch or iPad? Does he enjoy Lego, knex, play any sports, enjoy drawing?

planplan Sat 31-Oct-20 18:14:35

@Toilenstripes I don't necessarily want to get him stuff he doesn't want but I also don't want him on screens all the time so am looking for ideas of things he'll hopefully like when offered!

Turing Tumble.

Ah, that makes sense. What about Geocaching? It’s fun and gets you/him out of the house! 🙂

What does he do atm when he isn't on tech? Is he sporty/arty/likes books etc... My ds could easily become totally obsessed with tech if allowed but with screen limits he also loves lego, skateboarding, football and drawing.

what about some kind of mechanical lego or something similar

Mixingitall Sat 31-Oct-20 18:57:20

At this age my DS loved hot wheels tracks.

NoGoodPunsLeft Sat 31-Oct-20 19:04:20

Build your own robots/circuits?

Sawyersfishbiscuits Sat 31-Oct-20 19:06:57

The Elmers slime kits have been a good price on Amazon for a while. They're really good for this age and work brilliantly.
My DS is a similar age and likes Treasure X.

Comics. How to draw comics sets.

Really good books. Get recommendations from other 8yos.

How to do various things sets - magic tricks, rubiks cube.

Remote control drone or helicopter.

Book of logic puzzles for kids.

Stop motion animation kit.

Thinkfun games - they're like video games but in real life grin

My 8 year old loves lego, decent board games like ticket to ride, takenoko, azul, through the desert, dinosaur Island etc but also chess, top trumps and stuff, craft stuff, the funky ultralight air drying clay has been a massive half term hit, science kits, snap circuits.

MiniMileyMoo Sat 31-Oct-20 20:24:53

My 8 year old is getting gravitrax, a desk and lamp for his room, bop it and other bits TBC! Oh and Mario Lego to share with DH. He got a skateboard for his birthday which he loves.

I got my friend's DS this a few years ago - went down well.
I think the company also make other similar things.

PolloDePrimavera Sat 31-Oct-20 20:36:20

Some brilliant ideas on here!

mummyof2boys30 Sat 31-Oct-20 21:54:37

Pogo stick, life ryder scooter, walkie talkies, books, puzzles, uno, guess who, rush hour game, connect four. All favourites here when not gaming

Specialgodson Sat 31-Oct-20 22:00:27

Our dS has adored his Beano subscription . We’ve always steered away from technology except when allowed unlimited use at certain times and it makes such a difference so I liked this thread .
He’s also used a second hand Isla bike LOAds , I’d say one of the best things we’ve got him

Specialgodson Sat 31-Oct-20 22:01:38

Junior Monopoly has been a big hit too, and Bird Bingo, both assuming he has people to play them with . Our get constant use

planplan Sat 31-Oct-20 22:32:58

Thanks everyone some really good suggestions here. I'd better start ordering as it doesn't look like will be able to access 'proper' shops for any of this given today's announcement.
