Dare I mention vol au vents?

I know they are are very old fashioned but they are a bit of a tradition at Christmas in my household. Fir the last couple of years I have had to make the puff pastry cases myself and it's a bit of a faff! I used to be able to get up just Rol medium sized frozen cases in nearly all supermarkets but I cant find any who stock them now. Anyone seen them?

I have a feeling they might get them in for Christmas and New Year rather than stocking them all year around. So you might just need to wait a bit?

I've definitely bought them in the last couple of years, from Tesco at least once.

I like the cocktail sized ones, but last year I could only find the medium ones, in Iceland I think. I actually rang JusRoll, and the nice woman went to great lengths to find out where they were.

Apparently they stopped distributing cocktail sizes to retail shops, only to places like Costco.

Maybe this year the same fate has befallen medium ones.

For cocktail-sized ones I actually bought the pre-baked ones for Amazon one year (I was doing 600 for an event, and couldn't face baking that many!) and they were fine.

You can "air" them in the oven, but they tasted perfectly fresh straight from the box.

I managed to get some Jus Rol vol au vent cases in my delivery last week. Tried last year to get them, & could not find them in Tescos, Asda, Morrison’s or Co-Op.

Haven't seen them yet but I always get sent out for older relative to get them, in the last few years I have bought them in Sainsbury's (bigger store) and Waitrose.

You’ve reminded me of my long-gone DM - she always made the little ones for any sort of ‘do’ (with Jus-Rol). Her mushroom ones were delish.

I can imagine people sneering at the idea of vol-au-vents (hence the 'old-fashioned' reputation) but ohhhh this thread has made my mouth water.

Aldi or Lidl have them every year in Nov/Dec.

I always do them as part of my Christmas Eve canapé spread.

Thanks, Fairnair, unfortunately I am after the ones with 60 to a box, perfect bite size. I assume Jusroll are, as last year, only supplying them to Costco.
Theoretically I could join Costco, but considering the amount entertaining we will not be doing, it is hardly worth it.

I like crab or salmon mousse garnished with a dinky little slice of cucumber and a sprig of dill

Or horseradish sauce, then a tiny slice of cherry tomato, topped with a little cube of roast beef

Also melty Brie or other soft cheese, topped with cranberry sauce and a walnut

Mmm I love vol au vents. They were the height of sophistication when I was a child
I’ve definitely bought the pre made ones in lidl. And I think Aldi has the ready to bake ones.
I use disposable piping bags (Poundland) to keep cold fillings and sauce garnishes in the fridge so I can put them together quickly with no mess at the last minute.

Could also do egg mayonnaise topped with a tiny shrimp and a sliver of lemon peel

Smoked salmon with sour cream, caviar and chives

Gravadlax with mustard and honey sauce, topped with thinly sliced shallot

Ham terrine with apple sauce and crispy bacon

As long as you don't live near me and buy them all I'll tell you, because 2 years ago everywhere was sold out but Iceland!
I actually still have a box as I may have gone nuts and bought lots.
We do have them at birthdays as well as Christmas because my chicken and ham vol au vonts are legendary

I do chicken and mushroom usually, but have also done smoked salmon mousse, feta and caramelised onion and peppers, cream cheese with pesto and sundried tomato, piped sweet potato mash topped with pulled pork.

My DSis has made sweet ones, which were fun!
