Have I ruined my christmas pudding?

I made one 2 weeks ago for the 1st time and thought I was being so poncy and domesticated! (And amazing!)

But I haven’t steamed it yet!

When I read that you can mature it and then cook it on christmas day I didn’t realise it meant cook AGAIN!!

It’s been left totally uncooked in the kitchen cupboard for 2 weeks.

Have I totally ruined it?

Oh dear OP. I’ve been making them for years but never heard of someone doing this! You might be ok if brandy was in the mixture, but the apple might have fermented. How warm is your kitchen?

I’d make another to be on the safe side. The traditional day to do so is stir up Sunday (last Sunday before advent).

Make it, then steam it immediately for 4-6 hours, topping up the water round the sides if needs be, allow to cool then put on a fresh ‘lid’ of greaseproof paper and foil, then resteam on Christmas Day for 3 hours.

Oh, I’m sorry try not to beat yourself up- everyone makes massive and small mistakes in the kitchen at times. I made my son’s christening cake as our leftover wedding cake tier wasn’t big enough, and I completely messed up and had to do it again!

P.S don’t throw out the mistake one- steam it now and eat it to see if it’s ok, then at least it’s not wasted. If it does taste a bit off you can chuck the rest.

If your kitchen is very cool, have a look, smell and listen. Fermentation causes bubbles you can see and hear and has a smell ( think beery).

However, any eggs in it are an animal product so may not be safe.

But I am one for not wasting stuff and would be cooking it well tonight and inspecting it closely before deciding what to do. I hear that slices fried in butter are a good breakfast so perhaps cook it up and then have a snazzy breakfast after hallowe’en.
