Good quality lip balm, lotion or body butter. Stationery and nice chocolates e.g Hotel chocolate or Godiva, perfume, gloves and good book to read. Maybe a personalised mug. Her favourite tea. Lovely bath salts or luxury bubble bath from Ted Baker. A scented candle and a scarves .

I'm lolling at 'she's 48 and modern'

Blimey. You talk as if she's 90

I’m 45. Am I ‘modern’?

What does ‘modern’ mean? Are any 48 year olds not modern? You make 48 sound like it’s 90.

Well, I'm 48 and don't think I'm "modern". I hate High Street fashion with a passion, loathe Insta-"influencers", I knit, draw and paint for fun and would rather stick forks in my thighs than have a fucking spa day.

I think OP is saying her mum is the opposite of me.

Ann Summers gift card? Too modern? GrinWink

I’m similar to you, Harriet, in fact it sounds very much like we’d get on!

Possibly I am not modern. I’m not sure i’m ready for that realisation.

Aw give her a break you meanies, she’s trying to do something nice for her mum, I’d be chuffed if my DCs were asking about nice ideas for something to buy me. To the kid of a 48 year old, she IS old!

OP I think it’s lovely that you’re making your dear old mum a stocking, some good ideas here already.

I’m 45 and trying to think what I’d appreciate.

For me, I’d like some small perfume testers, (like a sample box of 6 or so, to try new ones from a range I already like) or a nice long lasting lipstick. Toiletries always a a winner - I like Lush, but whatever your mum usually gets as a treat.

How about florentines, baclava or cantuccini biscuits etc for a nice change from chocolates?

A scarf would be nice if she wears them, and would bulk it out a bit!

Agree - Nice mug. Candles.

I like art stuff so some posh brush pens or a calligraphy pens would be good. Does your mum have a hobby?

I'm also old and modern and I'd be SO chuffed if one of my DC ever do this for me. OP if she's into cosmetics maybe get the M&S beauty calendar and decant all the bits out of that? If she's not then perhaps some cashmere gloves, scented candle, silly kitchen timer, tiny picture frame with the two of you type things.

I would think about her and the things she would like and find useful. Mobile phone charger, something hobby related, memory stick, favourite chocolate. I would be more touched if my dc got me my favourite bar of Aldi chocolate than a really expensive brand because it shows that they notice what I like.

My Mum is a little older at 50 and her ideal stocking would be:

New pjs
Voucher for us to have a meal/night out
Those 5 pack of Aldi chocolate bars
Big bag of onion rings
A new iPhone case
Miniature ciroc or gin liqueur
Some tutti fruiti vape juice
Trolley token
Hard rock cafe scarf
Voucher for a massage

I think I may have just sorted my Mum's Christmas present 😂

I do stocking for my parents every year, include all of the above kind of stuff and usually look for a nice Christmas tree ornament, something a bit different or crafty. It's hard to keep coming up with ideas after 20 odd years!!

I think that you've used the word "fucking" shows that you are the definition of "modern"

Konjac sponge, silk pillowcase, miniatures of whatever she drinks, an iTunes gift card, posh chocs, a five year diary, cashmere socks, a new strap for her fitbit, cashmere gloves, a chillys bottle or similar, a book, a nail polish.

On the right lines?

Oh and I'd like a nice flavored gin, a nice room diffuser, big bar of galaxy or Cadbury chocolate forget the expensive rubbish body lotion to match my favourite perfume or a huge serving plate I like serving plates!
