Stockings - who gets one ?

didireallysaythat · 17/12/2017 22:27

DS2 (7) possibly a believer. He gets one
DS1 (11) no longer a believer but going along for his brother's sake. He gets one
DH1 gets one but mainly because he always gets socks for Xmas so I stuff one sock into the other and add some chocolate.

I don't get one. Of course I don't. I'd be buying presents for myself. I wonder if the kids think that's strange ?

(Stocking presents are from santa, everything else comes from someone. No letters written, no lists, we make it up as we go along)

In our hours we all have a stocking including adults and all presents come from Santa in stocking and under tree. Usually my stocking is a couple of gifts from dh and on his acouple from me.

Dd (7) and ds (10) get stockings from santa (ds non admitting non believer!!!)

Then whatever adults are in the house get their stocking done by me (je this year my mum and dh). Dh does mine. Kids know these aren't from santa. It's not a full stocking though it's basically if they have a present that'll fit in then that goes in along with some bags of sweets, a toothbrush and some shower gel

No one.

Just nice presents sitting under the tree.

Kids get stocking from Santa, dh and I do one for each other and the kids know that F.C. doesn’t fill grown ups stockings, we just do ours for fun.

Everyone gets a stocking (including any guests) from Father Christmas. My stocking is my favourite bit of Christmas: chocs, a magazine, some hand cream, mini wine bottle, chutney, posh biscuits, a nice Christmas tree decoration, a book, few small bits. Brilliant.

Everything under the tree is from someone and needs a proper thank you. Stocking is just there to enjoy.

In our house there are stockings for the dc, dog, 2 cats, 2 guinea pigs and 3 ducks.

None for adults though.

butteredscone do you do your own stocking ? I like the idea of getting one (little gifts that are fun and useful but not enough to put under the tree) but I don't think it would occur to DH to make me one (I'm grateful for anyone and I don't really need anything - oh the internal.conflict!)

Just the children. Even the two non believers. Although I only started doing them a few years ago. Everything DH and I buy for the kids comes from Father Christmas, bigger gifts go in a sack downstairs. Tree presents are from friends and family who we've seen before Christmas Day and get opened on Boxing Day.
DH and I never got stockings as children so not really bothered about getting them as adults, although sometimes we give each other little bits and bobs as well as a main gift.
I have done stockings for my parents a few times though and snuck them to their house on Christmas Eve which they loved.

WTF - does your dh put in zero effort then? I can't get my head round the idea that you think the only way you get a stocking yourself is if you do it.

Your dh is responsible for doing your stocking. It is OK to give him instructions as to the general categories of things.

In our household everyone gets a stocking.

No one is a "believer" in an actual magical being who fills the stockings but we reiterate that father christmas is real and true because father christmas is the name we give to the phenomenon of true altruism where you want to give something away for the joy of seeing someone else made happy by it.

No way would my OH do a stocking. He thinks it is plain silly.

What on earth would you put in a duck's stocking!?! Shock

Duck caller? Bill balm? Duck treats?

Can you not ask your dh to do you a stocking, tell him you’d like one? My dh gets me stuff like new lipstick, book, small bottle of wine or favourite spirit, chocolates I like, hair bands, handcream, useful bits like a penknife or bookmark, sometimes something a bit nicer like earrings. You can do most of it in a sweep of Sainsbury’s though.

Never heard of duck treats; learn something new everyday...Confused
It's much nicer then your stocking is a surprise. If I had to do my own I really wouldn't bother as it would just add to the hassle and be pointless.

I was being silly, but I guess ducks must have something they like - intrigued too. My sil does stockings for all her pets, and I used to for my dog.

Everyone who's in the house for Christmas Eve gets one. I had A Lot of stockings to stuff when we had eight members of DH's family staying for a week over Christmas.

DH does mine, would no-one do one for you OP?

Haha oh sorry Satauki i had a very broken nights sleep with 9 month old ds who refused to sleep for most of night and didn't twig on! I kind of understand dog stockings, I guess it was just the duck one that bamboozled me Grin

We dont do Santa but all 7 kids and me and Dh have a stocking. I buy stuff for dhs and he buys stuff for mine. We both but for the kids .

They're basically there to keep them occupied in bed for a little longer til we go downstairs to open the presents under the tree.

We keep our stockings downstairs on the fireplace and just open them along side our under tree presents. We don't keep any gifts upstairs XXXXX

DH more than pulls his weight in the house but I do the presents (I earn more, it just makes sense). I suspect the thought of buying lipstick would send him over the edge ! And I'm hardly going to ask him to make me one this late in the day. I suspect he's starting to panic about finding a present for me for under the tree (it's the one present I don't buy).

I just wondered if (a) anyone is in the same situation as me (answer: yes!) and if so (b) does the rest of the household notice (maybe the ducks would).

I feel absolutely cheated at not having a stocking from DP reading this actually. I've always wanted a stocking as an adult. I did make one for dp our first couple of chridtmases but he just put it with his tree gifts. I think I'll have to ask for one and see what happens.
