Is there a must have PS4 game?

I’m really stuck for gifts for DS(12). He doesn’t have any idea what he wants and so far his Christmas gifts consists of vouchers and a set of books! Hmm he plays mine craft, overwatch and fortnight on the PS4. He isn’t really into football games. Is there anything out now that he might like?

Star Wars Battlefront - it's a 16 though
Lego games?

Valerrie · 16/12/2017 19:09

Starwars Battlefront 2, Forza, Minecraft Story Mode.

Valerrie · 16/12/2017 19:09

Final Fantasy XV

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 16/12/2017 19:11

Ooh fast responses! Thank you both. He has the mine craft story mode. Is Star Wars battlefront particularly gruesome do you know?

Destiny?

Whatthequack · 16/12/2017 19:36

I'm getting my Ds Star Wars battlefront 2 - elite trooper & wwe 2k18. if you look on forbidden planet, you can get an art book of overwatch. Card games like exploding kittens, bears vs babies are meant to be good. You can also get overwatch pop vinyl characters.

Star Wars Battlefront isn't gruesome, it's a higher rating because it's realistic.

londonfeather · 16/12/2017 19:38

Gran turismo sport has just come out if he likes racing games

Whatthequack · 16/12/2017 19:38

Also b&m's do small cups filled with random American sweets for £2.99, which is usually a hit with older kids.

princesseggo · 16/12/2017 19:40

Crash Bandicoot has been re- released recently. My 11yo nephew is obsessed.

Whatthequack · 16/12/2017 19:43

You could also get a wireless headset if he currently has a wired one, or a controller skin?

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 16/12/2017 19:43

I wouldn't get star wars batrlefront 2. My dp is seriously into gaming and was looking forward to this but hasn't bought it because it had had a huge slating from the gaming community. Its a £50 game that has in game transactions... it's a money spinning exercise by EA.

Valerrie · 16/12/2017 21:42

It's not gruesome.

Formerly - the game play hasn't been slated. The micro transactions have been disabled and the actual game is fantastic. Your DP hasn't actually played it then?

It's very fun to play, it has a story mode and the online part is excellent too. You don't have to buy things - micro transactions are in most games like that now. Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls Online etc.

expatmigrant · 16/12/2017 22:16

fifa 18

bunbon · 16/12/2017 22:27

Forza is an Xbox exclusive OP so he won't be able to play that. I don't think Final Fantasy XV sounds particularly up his street, though it is a great game.

The microtransactions in Battlefront (i.e. paying for weapons, unlocking different characters etc) were awful but have been removed now.

Would it be possible to get in touch with his friends parents and see if they are getting any online games for their children, then they could play together?

Terraria might make a nice stocking stiffer if he hasn't already played It, you can get it quite cheap now. I know he doesn't like football games but pretty much everyone likes Rocket League and that's very cheap too.

A nice wireless headset would be great if he doesn't already have one.

bunbon · 16/12/2017 22:31

*stocking stuffer!

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 16/12/2017 22:47

Thank you everyone!! This has been really helpful. I have a feeling he already has a wireless headset because I remember him making a whole fuss over buying one with his own money from his birthday. We have been through a lot of headsets though so I’m not sure if that happened. Will check tomorrow. Good idea to speak to friends parents too!

Just realised he doesn’t have a wireless headset. He uses little earbuds and has to turn the mic on and off when I think he is talking to me and respond to him. Blush

Starwars battlefront is very samey and dare i say boring and my dsc lost interest quite quickly. Mine aged 11 love rocket league, fifa, fortnite, and rayman legends. As a family we all love overcooked, you can play with 2 players but its even better with 3 or 4.

ineedaholidaynow · 16/12/2017 23:27

Watching this with interest as DS(12) is desperate to have Star Wars Battlefront game. We have looked at common sense media and that appears to state the age rating is too high. Would people agree with that? DS loves the films.

However, looking at Amazon the reviews aren't good, so DH is loathe to buy it.

DS currently doesn't play online on the PS4 and he is quite happy with that. From the reviews it would appear SWBF is mainly online, is that correct? Don't want to buy it if he can't access most of the content.

Also from the Amazon reviews it would appear that to really improve the game you have to pay quite a bit for additional levels etc, which is also putting us off the game. But it is really the only thing DS wants for Christmas. Is it worth buying?

chronofix · 17/12/2017 07:33

if he wants it, get it. My 12 yo begged for it and really likes it- is not very experienced admittedly.

MotherCupboard · 17/12/2017 07:37

I think content wise star wars is fine for a 12yo. Its not gory at all, and i don't think there's any swearing. I'm not actually sure how much of the game is available offline as we use it online.

roundtable · 17/12/2017 08:04

I find the games ratings for the ps4 inconsistent. Star Wars shouldn't be a 16 (and I'm very strict with ratings usually).

Someone told me that Ps4 is marketed as a games console for adults hence the high ratings. I tend to watch dh playing them for a bit then we decide from there whether they're suitable.

Its odd because some games like assassins creed could be ok for younger teenagers and then the developers go and put in really strong language which then immediately rules it out again.

Valerrie · 17/12/2017 16:12

My 9 year old plays Battlefront and I'm strict with games. I presume it's mostly because of playing online and the possibility of hearing bad language. However you can mute other players, which is what we do.

LadyDeadpool · 17/12/2017 16:17

The microtransactions in battlefront will be back. It was hugely slated on the web receiving overwhelming negative reviews on Steam because of the fact that to actually advance in the game you would need to spend a lot of money in fact for 100% completition the cost was worked out as $2,100. To unlock Luke or Darth Vader would take 40 hours of campaigning if you don't pay.

Horizon Zero Dawn gets my vote.
