Do you tell the truth when your DC ask? And if you did - what age were they?

I normally fob them off, as it’s qhite obvious when they still believe but maybe have heard something from somewhere but desperately want you to keep the magic going
DS1 has ASD and has apparently known for a few years. He’s 11 this month. After xmas last year he told me he knew that Father Christmas wasn’t real and that it was us. The way he said it I knew the game was up. This year he’s agreed to be my little helper with the advent calendar and elf etc.

Brie, that is what I have tried for the last couple of years but DD, 8, has asked me point blank and asked me to tell her the truth. I bought myself some time and I have until morning to give her my answer!

Check out the letter on this site

(Sorry rubbish link)

I read it on here a few years ago and had to use it suddenly 2 weeks ago, when my nearly-8 yr old asked and was adamant she wanted the truth. I tried the whole "what do you think?" first but she wasn't having any of it. I rewrote the letter to suit us and gave it to her - no further questions, no upset, and now she'll occasionally make sly proud references to knowing "the secret". It was way less of a big deal for her than I expected.

We have never done Father Christmas so never needed to backtrack. It’s not compulsory.

I never lied but I simply said that the magic changes and you’ll understand that when it does. They all came at some point and said they knew what I meant and then helped continue the magic for their siblings. We still track Father Christmas. We still keep presents a surprise. Stockings are still opened on our bed. Food is still put out for the Reindeer. They make a dreadful fuss if we suggest changing anything.

My 10 year old has ASD and still believes - but that’s out of sheer determination more than anything else I think.
My 9 year old on the other hand has clocked on, and I realised he had, but he’s never explicitly said anything. Yesterday we installed our ‘elf door’ and he came and told me, quietly, that he knows it’s fake. He then went on to say ‘but FC is real and always will be.’ That’s how I know he knows - he’s choosing to keep it going for his siblings.

The letter on that link made me well up a little bit.
