Looking for a manga drawing book (a "how to" type thing) and drawing kit for DS13. There are loads of books available but just wondering if anyone has any recommendations?

In terms of kit, do they draw with inks? Or do they use something like gouache on top of pencil?

Thanks!

Which ones did you order Japanese ?
I'm just wary of spending money on things that aren't that great and DS being a bit Hmm when he opens them!

Oh yay art stuff my specialty subject!

Books - Christopher Hart is probably the go to guy for this
This one and this one are pretty good starting points.

Materials - A Good quality sketchbook - a mixed media canson XL would be ideal, then a G-pen and ink if you want to go that route or for less mess Tombow or Mangaka pens, plus pencils and erasers for sketching, then for colour most traditional artists will use something like the Copic alcohol markers the ciao are fine and if you order from cultpens they're £2.49 each other brands are just as good but most prefer copic for the brush nib. Coloured pencils I'd recommend Faber-Castels polychromos over prismacolour as although prismacolour are cheaper the lead is offset in the wood and this tends to cause huge amounts of breakage and is very frustrating.

If he's interested in a paint medium the gansai tambai watercolours are a reasonable price and come in very large pans they're also more of a gouache watercolour mix so are more opaque than traditional watercolours like windsor and newton.

Also on the book front Mark Crilley is a well known mangaka who does how to books and would probably be a name your son would recognise

My brother is into this sort of drawing - he's after Copic pens for Christmas. Hobbycraft do 2 sets of "manga" colours

Ah! Brilliant ideas! Thank you all so much. I’ll get on to these links first thing tomorrow. I think I’ll start with the Copic markers & G Pen. I’ll leave the watercolours for now as I have plenty of gouache in my studio that he can experiment with & hopefully his own set of specialist pens will stop him from pinching mine //hmm
