I’m thinking of buying something like this for ds. What do they do exactly, and what would he use it for? I don’t want to ask him as it’s the only thing I can think of for a surprise present.

Ours is used mostly for playing music through Spotify (my SIL has Amazon Music).

We've bought them for our DC (6 and 10) for this purpose.

They'll figure out other stuff to do with it themselves Grin

We are getting one for DS along with amazon music which is £3 a month or therabouts. DS can work the rest out himself.

I asked DS (15) earlier as I saw on here they’re down to £34 and I still have they to spend on him from my parents budget after Xbox stuff has been bought! He said it’s just Amazon’s version of Siri so if you have an iPhone it’s not worth buying. He also said to do all the light changing things etc as per the advert you need to buy smart lights (or something like that). Also said it can be used as speakers but you might want an echo (?) for that! Hope that helps!

Jock. Thanks. I’d not have known it was a dot for music. Please thank your DS 😀

I have to disagree with Jock. It does an awful lot more than just play music. It has all the features of the Echo but the speakers aren't as good. Having said that if it's for a teenagers bedroom the dot is perfect. The sound is ideal for that or background music etc. I've got one in my kitchen and can hear the music from it if I'm on my decking.

I've ordered 2 today for Christmas presents as they're down to £35.

I'd definitely recommend them.

Can they be hooked up to speakers? So, buy the cheapest one and play through speakers?

The sound without speakers is really good
It's ideal for playing in the house. Probably wouldn't be enough for a party but otherwise it's great 😊

You can connect them to Bluetooth speakers or via a cable, and can now do WiFi calling to other people with Amazon echo or echo dots.

So you can use a dot without the Echo?

Report
Redglitter · 15/11/2017 23:10

Yes, it does the same things it's just a smaller version

Thank you, I’ve ordered one from Argos for £35. For that price, even if he just gets a bit of fun asking it the time etc, will be worth it.

The best thing is that you can drop in from your dot to his dot and tell him tea's ready without having to bellow up the stairs.

If you get it from Amazon you can get a plug for £10 and whatever he has plugged into it can be turned off by voice command, ie bedside light.

He can also verbally add events to his calendar and to do list to help him become more organised if he's too lazy to write it down. And ask it each morning what he has on that day.
