Christmas

Can someone help a gaming dummy with a quick piece of advice please?

I have decided on an X Box 1 for the dc's main Christmas present. They will have to share it. I am also going to get a new tv for us as a family, and I am going to reconfigure the playroom on Christmas Eve to make it a more grown-up space.

It's the first console they have had, aside from an ancient Wii that never really worked properly. They like completely different things and I have seen two bundles. One Minecraft (ds2 would like) and the other Fifa 17 (ds1 would like). Both around £230ish.

Questions:

  1. Is this an ok price?
  2. Would I need to buy anything else other than another controller?
  3. (I know this is a monumentally stupid question, but I have to ask) Whichever bundle I don't buy, I just buy the other game separately, yes? Blush
  4. Will one game each be enough to be going on with? They will get some other stuff, but not masses, but I don't want them on X-Box non-stop over the festive period. I also think they will play each other's games together when it comes to it, but is one game each ridiculously mean to begin with?

TIA

One game each will be fine. You could buy the other game second hand.

If you get the chance, I'd buy a charging dock for the controllers.

You'll need access to wifi , and I'd set it all up ahead of Christmas for a chance to download updates and register for Xbox Live etc.

Great thank you. Will get a dock and we have Wifi, so that's fine. I've read this about setting it up before - how do people manage that while keeping it hidden?

DS has a PS4 so I can't answer about price, sorry.

You can buy games separately.

Two controllers is a very good idea.

DS also has a headset/earphones which allows him to communicate with his school friends (ONLY) and I don't have to hear the music/effects of the game.

Just in case it was a typo there is s newer version of the FIFA game (FIFA 18) so you might want to get the Minecraft bundle and buy the newer Football game.

I don't know if there is an Xbox version available but DS has a game called Rocketleague which he enjoys playing. DH plays too if they want two player mode or it can be played solo. It is a football type game but played with hotwheels cars instead of humans. DS is very happy with preowned games - they don't have to be brand new.

A lot of the games you get now are single player so you may have to set up a diary for use further down the line. If anyone is looking for suggestions of gifts for them I'd suggest cash or vouchers for somewhere like CEX as they can pick up lots of games 2nd hand as they wont need all the latest games when they are just starting out.

Gosh thanks for that about the Fifa game, Woolly, I had no idea. I seem to have found a bundle for the same price that's Minecraft with the console and comes with Fifa 18 and an extra handset. How odd is that? Is it too good to be true or shall I go for it? I hate making these decisions alone?

If it comes out cheaper than the individual bits then I'd just do a final check that there aren't some cheaper ways to do it/discount codes or you have some points for the shop etc. Then I'd go for it. It's comforting to know that you have exactly the right gift all safe and secure and you don't have to worry about it. There may or may not be bargains down the line or it may be hard to get stock, who knows!

You might get a good deal if you can wait for Black Friday. I found a good deal on a PS4 through this website last year www.techradar.com. Definitely set it up beforehand if you can unless you want to spend the whole of Christmas day doing it with your DC's asking 'Is it done yet?'

Don't you have any 'cex' shops near you ?
Everything they sell is second hand.

They are great for second hand games (or add on's like an extra controller or we bought an Xbox 'Kinect' there) they test quality of everything so you know you aren't buying a dodgy item.
