Has anyone been to the markets in York, Ludlow or Birmingham please? Any good or any top tips?

Went to the one in Birmingham a few years ago, really didnt rate it at all. Hordes of people, naff stalls and just didn't have a nice atmosphere IMO. The York one is supposed to be very good, I would like to go this year.

The German market in Birmingham can get busy but lots of good food (smells AMAZING), drink and craft stalls. The sausages are to die for!! Good atmosphere especially when the parade is on, although think that’s been cancelled the last couple of years - not sure if it’s back this year.

The big wheel and the ice rink are being moved this year to somewhere a bit out of the way, though they’re by no means a must-do - never been tempted despite passing it every day on the way home from work! Roast chestnuts are enough excitement for me Smile

I agree with brieandcrackers. German Market in Birmingham got lots of good food though this isn't the place for you if you want a rather calm atmosphere in between bites :)

Hello, just come back from Harrogate and York. Harrogate has a Christmas Market, more like eat yourself to death and buy stuff you didn't need, whilst penned in an enclosure - we avoided, as it was like the London Underground! York was lovely, decorated, well lit with trees and the retailers (which are not just the usual standard fare, but local butchers, glass crafts, Whitby jewellery, etc., ) had made a real effort. They have stalls dotted around the City, shops were open late and on Sunday they were still going at 6pm. They have small market areas, which are themed for food and crafts, as well as some of the usual fare. Betty's was open to 9pm, so rounded off the day in there, yum! Don't think we saw it all, but we enjoyed York. We bought some items for Christmas, enjoyed the restaurants (not the chains, but one-off in York / Harrogate) and would go again.
