Christmas

How can I convince dp to allow this twitch?

I've finished buying presents for 3yo dd. Her stocking will be full and there will be a handful of other presents from me and dp. She will also get lots from family and friends. This week I was asking her what she thought Father Christmas might bring her and she told me he was bringing her a scooter. I need to twitch! Dp thinks this is unnecessary as she got a balance bike last year for Christmas but she's not that confident on it yet. I think she is mainly coveting a nursery friends scooter, and dp thinks this isn't good enough as she already has something similar. I can just imagine how happy she would be on Christmas day if she were to get one. Dp said he will feel bitter if I go ahead. FYI I think she'll be too busy on Christmas today with other presents to realise, but I'm worried about letting her down Xmas Sad I know there will be times in life where she is disappointed, but I'm not sure Christmas day is a day for teaching lessons.

How do other people manage these kind of expectations from children?

He'll feel bitter about a scooter?!

The tight git, twitch away. A stocking and a handful of presents is hardly excessive. A scooter isn't a big ticket item.

Tell him to stop being such a scrooge. It's Christmas!

And a balance bike is nothing like a scooter. A scooter is much easier.

If you didn't get it for her Christmas, when would your next opportunity be? When is her birthday?

You can pick scooters up relatively cheaply, especially somewhere like home bargains or B&M... Go for it... He won't stay mad for long when he realises it's made her day when she gets it!

Scooter is far and away the best present we bought DS (for his 3rd birthday). He uses it to and from school every day (about smile each way) and it's very handy for keeping up with adult walking pace. He never got on with his balance bike...

Buy it don't tell him and write on tag it's from santa Xmas Grin

Tell him Santa sent it Xmas Grin

...but also, 3yr olds do this all the time depending on what they see and hear - has she mentioned it lots over the last few weeks spontaneously as you've chatted about nursery (then def get it) or just because you asked her?

Remember she doesn't know what else she's getting and will be happy with those things too

So when she asks for a pony you will buy her one right?
You can't buy everything they ask for, nothing wrong with a little disappointment. I've always got my dc to leave their Christmas lists on xmas eve with the mince pie etc, so they can only get what santa has in his sack, so maybe he just won't have scooters etc. I let them know that getting everything they want is not always possible before the big day.
Save the scooter for her birthday or as an extra special Easter present

Can you get the scooter and keep some of the other stuff back for her birthday? Or vice versa. It doesn't sound like you've gone nuts with stuff for her anyway. And I agree, a scooter is totally different to a balance bike, which always look slightly frustrating for the child to me (based purely on DC1 quickly losing interest in the one PIL decided to buy on a whim).

That was a bit of an over-reaction from your DP. What's he like generally?

Scooters are amazing!! better than endless amounts of toys.

We bought DS (nearly 3) an Oz Boz scooter from Amazon recently. It was only £20 and he loves it. Could be an option?

You're making too much of it - it's about your expectations of Christmas and not a 3 year olds.

She's already got presents- she'll be totally happy. It won't be some massive lesson, it'll just gently introduce the norm that we don't get everything in life. But she won't even notice it being introduced.

She's 3 - she won't even remember she mentioned it. You cannot buy every single thing she talks about.

Pottering my almost 3 year old has been reeling off his Christmas list to anyone who dares to ask him for about 2 months. It's always exactly the same. I wouldn't be so sure that she won't remember!

unless you and your DP have separate incomes, you are being encouraged to spend Family Money behind his back. I think you need to talk together and agree on a way forward that you are both OK with.

Either wait for her birthday, or keep some of the other presents back. It does sound like she already has quite a lot.

Can someone explain this use of 'twitch' to me please? It's too early to guess new words.

The Christmas twitch is whenyouknow you've finished shopping, you know you have everythignbut you just can't shake the feeking that you need to get one more thing...

SoupDragon · 15/12/2016 07:34

I would go for the scooter. Sell it to your DP on the basis of it being a healthy present that will encourage your DD to exercise and mention childhood obesity being down to the increasingly sedentary life of children...

I twitched and got my 4 yo dd a scooter for christmas. Only £12 from tesco. It looks good for the price too.

I plan on getting her a micro scooter in the summer but couldn't spend that much on an extra at christmas.

Go on. Do it. Scooters are one of those superlative presents that give far more hours of fun than anything else. It's worth it to see her face. It's not like a £££££s type thing.
