My little pony for beginners

DD has requested a pony but they are a new thing for her so she wasn't very specific, and when I've looked on Amazon there are so many - are any better than others, is there any real difference?

My daughter has only recently started getting into them too and I am slowly learning about them. Yey.

Rainbow Dash (the blue one with rainbow hair) is very popular and one of the 'main' characters. She can fly and is sporty and competitive. The other main ones are Pinkie Pie (my daughter's favourite; a pink, irritating party planner that sounds like she's on speed), Apple Jack the apple farmer, Rarity the vain one, Fluttershy (is shy and can fly) and Midnight Sparkle who is the sort of focus of the whole thing.

There are many, many others who sort of merge into one sea of pastel plastic to me I'm afraid.

Do you have Netflix? The series is on there and you could let her watch an episode and see which one she likes best.

Yes we have Netflix and I think that's where it has started. Applejack rings a bell, I think I had one of those myself about a million years ago! Although it looked rather different to the current one...

I live in a My Little Pony house so here goes:

Princess Twilight Sparkle is an allicorn (unicorn and flies). She's purple and the sort of group leader.
Rainbowdash - pale blue with rainbow coloured main (daughters favourite)
Pinkie Pie - pink (daughters 2nd favourite)
Rarity - white with purple mane
Fluttershy - yellow with pale pink mane
Apple Jack - yellow with and orange main.

Those are the main characters and if starting out then the ones to go for. You get small ponies with a brush for about £4-5. Maybe start with them and that way if she doesn't stick with it it's no loss.

Really the main difference between them will be the accessories. These are usually tiny and a pain in the butt and horrendous to stand on (imagine standing on Lego).

I've attached a link to John Lewis site to give you an idea of the ones I mean but Asda and Tesco regularly have them in stock too.

You also have the equstria girls from the films. These are like monster high dolls.

This is from where sunset shimmer steals twilights crown and takes it through the magic portal that opens once a moon cycle. Then twilight when through and found Canterlot high and that she was humanoid

This spawned 4 films and loads of dolls. The dolls are cheap on the entertainer

DD has been pestering me to buy her bloody Rainbows Dash and Pinky Pie but It Is Not Going To Happen. If I repeat it often enough she'll just forget about it, right?

Honestly, on the scale of things kids could be watching on TV, I quite like MLP.

Every story is a bit moralistic, the writing is witty and the animation/music is of good quality.

Monster High is banned in our house because the production values are so poor, the storylines are vapid or make little or no sense and it's all centred around looking cool/boys/relationships etc. Yuck.

Top tip - don't buy the talking Pinkie Pie. You will want to KILL someone after its has screeched how many times it wants to go to party.

My daughter chose this - it has all the characters mentioned above and she plays with them endlessly. She's 4 and doesn't have a favourite yet.

I quite like MLP. It is obviously a bit pink and glittery but all the main characters are female and they actually have distinct personalities and have proper adventures.

I agree that the plastic ponies with brushable hair are good play value. Dd got the "mane 6" last Christmas and still plays with them almost every day.

MLP is the only glittery programme i can watch without stabbing my eyes out, i have been known to watch it willingly while ill

It is accessory crazy, H&M used to have tops and pjs (novelty pjs always go down well for christmas).

B and m bargains have a nice set of bath toys with the main characters. I think about £8. That with a couple of the proper ponys would be a good start.

Agree that there is loads of accessories. H and M are a good source, and primark has the odd (not entirely vile) t shirt. I loved mlp growing up. Didn't everyone have the stable with cotton candy. I felt very lucky to have the dream house, but also was madly in love with my friends nursery. We had so much fun with them. They do look different now, ours were much more horse like but the tshow isn't totally terrible!

There's a mlp busy book, it has the Mane 6 and several others, including Princess Celestia and Cadence (no Luna though) Spike and the Cutie Mark Crusaders.

Love this thread, and how expert some of you are DD (6) has got really into the Equestria girls , she watches episodes on Youtube, although she still loves the pony version as well. I'm just vaguely starting to get the hang of it all . Have just bought a Rainbow Dash equestria doll in the Entertainer for about £7 & DD spied a hat & gloves set in Asda £8 which she was hankering after!,

My daughter is 7 and has loved MLP for about 3 years now. We have SO many of them! I think it's Smyths that are selling the basic Mane 6 for £2.99 at the moment. The larger electronic ponies are nice, Celestia and Cadence. The castles can be a bit flimsy, but we have Twilight Sparkles set and Cadence & Shining Armoura wedding castle which get a lot of play.

My son is a big Equestria Girls fan. But not so much the third movie as there are no ponies in it. The second movie, Rainbow Rocks is his favourite because of all the music, which is actually very catchy, all the Siren songs are pretty great. We've just finished cleaning the kitchen while singing Battle of the Bands.

Princess Twilight Sparkle is his very favourite as she is the leader. He also loves Spike but prefers him in dragon form than dog.
