Unexpected gift - Do we reciprocate?

So, my boss usually gets everyone a bottle of wine from him for Christmas theres 20+ of us) Anyway, he has now gone semi retired resulting in reporting lines being changed. I am now the only person who reports to him. Anyway, yesterday he said Ive got a little something in the car for you and your DH in the car. Im not doing bottles of wine for everyone this year so you will have to come and get it and put it in your car. I duly did so and on gettin home saw it was a £20 bottle of champagne - his favourite kind he said - and also a gift wrapped up for my son.

I feel quite touched and flattered that he got me and DH a gift and that he and his wife also went and bought something for our son!

Now, I want to get them a gift in return but Im unsure if it will just look like I am doing it out of obligation.

WWYD?

Do you normally give a gift back?

Personally I'd probably get a wee token thing and say 'I know we don't really do gifts back but thought it was really thoughtful of you to get us something so wanted you to have a little something back'.

But I'd just make it a small thing - don't worry about matching the value of the gift.

Or get your son to make something?

I would say no. It's your boss - I've worked in several corporate environments and received some nice gifts I think it's a thank you for doing your job well this year. However if you bake or could do another homemade gesture that could be nice otherwise get your son to make a lovely thankyou card in the new year.

I might make some biscuits fo them over christmas, with my son (taking pictures as proof) and decorate them and gift them when we get back after Christmas?

That's a lovely idea, something homemade is personal, and lovely thank you card from your son.
