Christmas

Present for someone with expensive taste who doesn't appreciate anything

I need some gift advice for one of my nans. 'Nothing' isn't an option, because it's more about making my dad happy than her.

My GM doesn't appreciate anything. Will complain about the food if you take her out for dinner, the play that she demanded she was invited to and had tickets bought for her and the gifts she asks for. She's also a good one for 'oh I'll give you the money' and not actually giving it to her.

Every December my dad gets a list of her requests. He relents at a particular Chanel perfume she likes. My parents usually shove me on the gift label to get me off the hook, but this year she will be at ours for xmas day so I do need something for her to open from me.

Can someone suggest something no more than £20 that I can get for her that doesn't look shit as to not rock the boat? She will strop if she thinks she's been 'had'.

What about the soap that matches the perfume if chanel do such a thing? Posh shower gel or a posh lipstick (Chanel) - Nan sounds erm...tricky, hope you have a lovely day with her (hehe)

If your DDad is getting her the perfume, could you get matching soap, talc or body lotion?

A chanel make up mirror. Think they are 20 quid

I would suggest a charity gift such as a toilet, or a goat, or a swarm of bees. Then she can't complain without looking horrid. And you've done some good!
Oxfam or Good Gifts have a huge selection .

I was going to say Chanel make up mirror!

I would go for a box of chocs and sod it. People who are sniffily ungrateful don't deserve thought.

Ooooh no, frilly has it! A charitable goat is perfect.

I would suggest you just buy her a goat, or a swarm of bees. That'll give her something to complain about. Smile

Something from the pound shop wrapped nicely.

Dare you to get her the worst, most tasteless present you can buy! Grin
Go on, you know you want to.

I want a Chanel mirror now!!

What frilly said Grin - I was thinking a sniffer rat from GoodGifts!

If, like me, you worry she will kick off, Fortnum and Mason do vey posh-looking tea in a tin for £7.

Nice hand wash and hand cream set?
Bottle of gin or other tipple?

Charity goat would be hilarious but it's not worth the aggro. She is old and my DMum will be on edge because she is always vile to her, she won't want me to rock the boat as well.

Chanel soap, talc and mirror are all coming out at above £20 each.

Tea and shortbread for fortnums sounds like a good idea.

I am hoping she will be on her best behaviour because my lovely nana who would sweetly thank you for a mouldy pitta bread with a bow on will be there.

Ply her with lots of sherry and hit the Prosecco yourself is my advise!

Why does everybody in the family indulge such rude behaviour?

Something from TK Maxx that is posh brand but discounted?

Fuck me they've made the Chanel mirror expensive. I bought one as a fun indulgence on Boots points, think it was about 18 pounds :/

It's a long story bitoffun

Basically, she causes so much aggro if we don't do what she wants. She has hospitalised herself in the past (lives in another country so this is a nightmare) over not getting her own way.

She is in her late 80s now. Everyone just tries to get through Christmas without her stopping and sadly is eagerly awaiting the Christmas when she isn't here to ruin it for people.

Feel awful saying that, but oh my, she has bullied my mum over the years. My dad has fought in my mums corner, but it's still horrible.

Do not waste £20 on this evil woman! A packet of nice biscuits and tea will be fine. It's a token to keep the peace, but isn't indulging her too much.

Hotel Chocolat chocolates. They're gorgeous and look and taste lovely
( and maybe she'll offer them around...) don't know how anyone could complain about them!

Good grief. She sounds horrible. I'm intrigued now; there must be a back story to make her so awful! Your poor mum. What a shame you can't give her an Oxfam goat. Lots of lovely ideas on here though but nothing to add.

I would love to be a fly on the wall on Christmas Day at yours, sorry!

what about a lovely calendar with pics of you all for each month, with all the birthdays etc handily pencilled in?

Actually, I would quite like that:)
